Tatted Centerpiece by Roxie York

"A Very Pretty Tatted Centerpiece" by Roxie York.

Round 1 suggests using a 2 3/4" linen round hemmed with which to start. I recommend though we use the small motif from the second round for our starter. The original round 1 is a simple ring and chain repeat attaching to the linen round 27 rings, chains, 9 floating rings.

Round 2 is a round medallion which begins with a round center ring climbing out with a mock picot into a split ring into a classic wheel of large and small rings. Climbing out from a large ring into the outer row of alternating rings and chains. 1 ring, 16 small rings with 16 large rings, 16 rings with 16 chains.

Round 3 is a square medallion which attaches between the 9 round medallions of round 2. 20 rings and 20 chains. Needle weaving is added to the center, however, an additional tatted motif could be substituted.

Round 4 9 more round medallions from round 2 are used to create a scalloped border around the whole piece.

Round 4 continued: Forming a half circle around the medallions and attaching to the sides of a square medallion, an additional row of alternating ring and chains is added followed by a final round of all chains. 11 rings, 10 chains finishing with about 20 short chains.

Needle weaving is used to fill the center of the square medallion. A small tatted motif could be substituted.

The old-fashioned directions will be given. We will need 8 volunteers to rewrite the 8 separate pieces of the pattern into modern tatting notation (R 3-3-3 etc.) Diagrams are optional but most welcome. Then we need at least 5 volunteers to tat the separate pieces. No one tatter would be required to tat the whole thing, just a sample of each round.
