Chains, Chains, Chains

This is an exercise to aid the beginning tatter in developing good tension and regularity in picots disguised as a craft project. :)

This unusual antique piece caught my eye in the store display. I could see that the little flowers were tatted, but I had no clue as to the use of the piece. The dealer lists it as a "multi-colored hotpad."

"Hotpad?" Well.... so I bought it. The material is silk on both sides. There is no padding. It is irregular in shape and all edges hand sewn.

The flowers are tatted chains. Just chains, spiraled and tacked down with sturdy sewing thread. The chains all have a thick sturdy looking white cord as the foundation thread and standard crochet cotton is used to form the pretty outside tatting.
