Choose a size of thread in accordance with your purpose; No. 30 ecru crochet-cotton will give a handsome centerpiece for the library- or living-room-table, No. 70 a piece about eighteen inches in diameter."

Climb out from the mock picot of round one into a split ring:
Split ring 5 / 5 close.
CH 5 over to the first large ring and continue.

Tat pattern up to the first leaf of the last cloverleaf. Close it and then make a split chain over to where the splir ring exited previous round. Wrap split chain back to base of cloverleaf and tat the last side ring. Bring the shuttles together to tat the last center ring of the cloverlead as a split ring:

Split ring 5 + (join to last picot of previous ring) 2 - 2 - / 5 + (join to first picot of adjacent ring) 2 - 2 - 2 close ring and exit through mock picot.

Round 4
R 4 - 4 + (join to middle picot of 2nd ring of cloverleaf in last row)4 - 4, CL, RW
OR,
Move from the previous row via the mock picot into a split ring: Split ring 4 - 4 / 4 - 4 close ring and continue.
