Antique 8-PT Medallion

Jan Valeiro came across this antique 8-point medallion. She wrote to me asking if I could find the pattern in one of my old tatting books. "Jan", I said, "it would be a lot faster if you just let me draw a diagram of this medallion 'cause it might take me days to find the original pattern!" So we thought the class might like to see it, too.

8-PT Medallion

*R A 3 - 1 - 1 + 1 - 1 - 1 - 3 close ring. RW
R B 3 + 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 3 close ring. RW
R C 3 + 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 3 close ring. RW
CH D 6 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 6 RW
Repeat from * for length desired; join small rings of cloverleaf join at third free standing picot.

This is a good pattern to practice the use of the picot gauge. And new tatters may want to read the notes on how to turn the work in progress. And before actually starting to tat, the new tatter might want to plan out how to hide the ends when finished. The magic thread trick is just right for this situation!
