This week we see the result of a tatting challenge. On the bottom of the pattern page, you will see a photo of a real monarch butterfly. I sent that photo to Dagmar Pezutto in Brazil with the challenge to create a monarch butterfly in tatting. Since this is a free-form design, there is no diagram.

We have a beautiful piece of dimensional tatting to study this week. The original was found in a museum in German and a photo of it was published in Frau Tina Frauberger's "Schiffchenspitze Band 11" 1921 book of tatting. Dagmar Pezutto has provided her interpretation of the original and Jane has prepared a diagram with a second intrepretationof it. It features a layered ring rosette. Dagmar's version has added beads in the center of the ring.

Be sure to review the reference links on placing a bead in the center of a ring.

Cherry Blossom pattern shared by Anita Barry

Nina Libin has adjusted Anita Barry's pattern for size 30 Cebelia to create a nickel sized blossom.
1) If we make petal rings 5 - 10 - 5 - 10 - 5.each, five of them will make nickel size, and we'll have more pronounced 'dimple' and save 19 ds per ring.
2) If we skip tiny (4 ds) rings altogether and use thread between petals to attach central ring to, we'll save 20 more ds and time/effort to close those tiny rings, so altogether it will be almost 120 ds less to tat per each blossom.

In reading the logs I discovered there has been some discussion about my birthday. I was born in Brooklyn, New York at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge on February 28, 1948. The running family joke was that mom has to push hard to get me out before midnight so I would not be a Leap Year Baby. Had I been one, my 64th birthday this year would actually have been my "Sweet 16." Now that is not so bad!Anyway, thanks to every one for the many kind greetings.
