AJ Sutton's Tatted Bridal Rice Bag

R = ring
CH = chain
SH1 = shuttle 1
SH2 = shuttle 2
- = p = picot
clr = close ring
+ = join
rw = reverse work
dnrw = do not reverse work

cloverleaf = three rings joined with no bare thread between them
Split Ring = ring partly tatted and partly wrapped (ds not flipped)
Split Chain = chain partly tatted and partly wrapped (ds not flipped)

Round 1
R 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 clr rw (6 picots)
*CH 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 rw (7 picots)
R 3 - 3 + 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 clr rw Repeat from * for total of 7 rings.
Make the last chain a split chain.
Split chain 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 / 3 - 3 - 3 climb out with a mock picot.

Round 2
Climb into round 2 with a split ring.
Split Ring 3 - 3 - 3 / 3 - 3 - 3 clr dnrw
CH 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 rw
*R 3 - 3 - 3 + (join to third picot of chain in round 2) 3 - 3 - 3 clr rw
CH 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 rw
R 3 - 3 - 3 + (join to fifth picot of chain in round 2) 3 - 3 - 3 clr rw
CH 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 rw
Repeat from * around for total of 14 rings.
Make the last chain a split chain.
Split chain 3 - 3 - 3 / 3 - 3 - 3 climb out with a mock picot. dnrw

Round 3
Begin this all chain round right after the mock picot.
CH 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 rw (7 picots) + (shuttle lock join to center picot of chain from round 2)
Make last chain a split chain
Split chain 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 / 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 climb out with mock picot rw
(rw is needed here because the arch of the chain of the last round face outward instead of inward.)

Round 4
CH 8 rw
Cloverleaf:
R 6 - 8 - 8 - 6 clr. Leave no space.
*R 6 + 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 6 clr. Leave no space.
R 6 + 8 - 8 - 6 clr. rw
CH 8 + (join to middle picot of chain from round 3) 8 rw
R 6 - 8 + (join to middle picot of previous ring) 8 - 6 clr. Leave no space
Repeat from * around.Be sure to insert magic thread loops to aid in hiding ends in the first ring and first chain .

AJ made two circles of soft satin (matched to the bridal colors) and sewed them together leaving a space to turn. After turning sew opening shut and press flat. Baste tatting to satin and sew down with tiny stitches. Run a ribbon through the side rings of the cloverleaf to gather. Many thanks to AJ Suttong for sharing her work with the online tatting class.
