Margaret: I am here as it is Thanksgiving Day in Canada GinaS: And did you get the last one I sent? picotsnkeys: yes, thanks Gina epope: Hi Melanie GinaS: That's what you can do with that inkscape program I told you about picotsnkeys: glad you are here Margaret, Aurora, and.....Elizabeth!!! Aurora: I thought it was just in USA not a canadian celebration picotsnkeys: we didn't scare you off? GinaS: I "drew" the diagram right on top of the picture of the motif GinaS: in separate layers, as I was explaining Margaret: but I am only here for 10 minutes as I am taking the bus (once hourly on a holiday) to pray outside the local hospital that performs abortions GinaS: your pattern is just wonderful though!!!!!!!!!! GinaS: And I just showed aurora my hat Margaret: we have it but not at the same time. Ours is the second Monday of October while USA is the last Thursday of November Aurora: ohh I thought it was the third thursday AKTATTER: Happy thanksgiving to all the tatters in Canada! Margaret: thank you, Georgia Aurora: really, Happy thanksgiving AKTATTER: Happy Columbus Day to all the Italian and American Italian tatters GinaS: I'm american italian :) AKTATTER: And greetings on lucky Double 10 Ihopeyou are wearing red Margaret: that is why I can be here today and I will be back tonight. I should be back in about 10 min GinaS: there are rough areas now GinaS: h iMary AKTATTER: hey Cyn be safe Margaret: hi all the newcomers epope: hi mary GinaS: be careful cynthia Margaret: Georgia, I am only here for about 10 minutes right now GinaS: most of the damage is on the A and E keys Aurora: brb Coffee breaktime :)) GinaS: mmmmm coffee GinaS: hmmm should I make another cup of coffee this late? picotsnkeys: tea kettle is hot....so time for tea picotsnkeys: decaf Earl Grey anyone? Margaret: when I am tatting that cross bookmark from Monica Hahn's book, "Christmas Angels and other Tatting Patterns, p 26, it has four rings and then the chain. As I am trying to do it in two colours on needle, can I do all four rings together, then change colours? GinaS: I'll stick with espresso, strong! Margaret: I have studied Barb Grainger's instructions and I think I understand them GinaS: Melanie can answer that when she gets back GinaS: she just did a lot of work with that pattern picotsnkeys: mmmm two color needle....let me think AKTATTER: yes and she has a good diagram to help also Margaret: not the Bible pattern the cross pattern GinaS: I think I'll indulge in some afternoon coffee GinaS: brb picotsnkeys: it would be very easy with shuttle as long as you finish each square, cut and tie picotsnkeys: ah...what page? Margaret: I am not working the one with squares, Melanie, I am working the cross bookmark on page 26 that says to do it in two colours picotsnkeys: ah...let me look Margaret: it is at the top of the page with the filigree bookmark at the bottom, page 26 Margaret: melanie, do you tat needle or shuttle, I am trying to do this with the needle. I did it very early in my tatting career at least twice with the shuttle. No problem epope: k lelia: Aurora: Coffee sounds good - perhaps I should brew a cuppa, too picotsnkeys: the only way I can see it right now is to use "true rings" for the rings with the needle thread and then carry that thread through as the core for the chains. Does that make sense? GinaS: mmmm my version of "mocha" picotsnkeys: it would be more graceful with shuttle, but should be possible with needle.... GinaS: cafe bustelo espresso, splenda, creamer, and a squirt of chocolate syrup picotsnkeys: Do you have Barb's email (Canby OR)? picotsnkeys: she might have a more practical suggestion for needle GinaS: yummm GinaS: oh gosh lelia hi! GinaS: Missed you coming in Margaret: according to the instructions that Georgia gave me whenever from Barb Grainger, to do two colours, the rings are true ring with a cut thread, tied to the ball thread of the second colour and starting with the needle on the knot picotsnkeys: that's what I would try Margaret: but in those instructions, just one ring was tatted at a time. In this pattern, four are tatted in a row, then the chain. Would it be the same thing? GinaS: its amazing how much noise 7 puppies can make lelia: Hi Gina ; ) picotsnkeys: mmmm let me think again GinaS: I wonder if RVer is having trouble coming in? Margaret: will you be back again tonight, Mel? I MUST go. buses do not wait and as this is a holiday, it could be EARLY lelia: I'm sneaking thru the house so the dog doesn't wake up -- silly me picotsnkeys: I think with needle I would work from the out in epope: k GinaS: RVer, click on Join Chat at the bottom of the page if you can see this picotsnkeys: I will try to get back this evening. GinaS: dark purple, med. purple and a variegated that has green and purple in it, and then yellow instead of black AKTATTER: are there any general questions? GinaS: if I can figure it out, I *know* you can, melanie! picotsnkeys: thanks epope: no jest lurking and absorbing as much as I can Aurora: back again AKTATTER: feel free to ask questions any time, this first 30 mins is open to all questions GinaS: Wb aurora :) AKTATTER: Aurora is looks like the emaildodo list is going to work fine I have had no reports of trouble so far Aurora: :) Aurora: I have one question AKTATTER: Yes? GinaS: I got the test letter picotsnkeys: oh oh AKTATTER: great gina AKTATTER: mel I like what you have done so far on the cross pattern picotsnkeys: is Aurora going to keep us on our toes again? Aurora: I was trying to make a maltese doily and I dont know how to hide the tail and the end of the thread picotsnkeys: ty AK GinaS: I do too georgia, it looks wonderful! Aurora: lolol what´s that Mel? AKTATTER: the last tatted element is a ring or chain? MaryR: . Aurora: a chain, picotsnkeys: keep us on our toes = ask challenging and unusual questions epope: k Aurora: look the problem is the bold thread AKTATTER: and does this chain attach to ring or chain? Aurora: lololol I hope Not Dorcas Ann joined the chat 6 hours ago GinaS: Hi dorcas ann AKTATTER: welcome Dorcas Aurora: to a ring and then to a chain Dorcas Ann: Hello everyone picotsnkeys: Hi Dorcas Ann Aurora: Hi Dorcas :) AKTATTER: the color is so bright that it shows through? Aurora: not really, I tat very tied epope: hi Dorcas AKTATTER: so the tatting is s tight that it is difficult to use the magic thread trick?? Aurora: but is thick and if i make a knot i shows up ugly RVer joined the chat 6 hours ago Aurora: not so tight lololol My problem is the core thread upon i tat, it´s thick AKTATTER sent out an invitation 6 hours ago Aurora: there is not book where it´s explained Cynthia: have you tried just working the ends in without a knot...I have done that but always at least 10 sts in and only when it is supported by other rings/chains as it can get loose Aurora: how to finish it, RVer: Hi y'all. AKTATTER: do you ever tat chains direct tatting as in wrapping a split ring? Cynthia: welcome RVer.... Dorcas Ann: hello, RVer picotsnkeys: Hi Mary AKTATTER: http://www.e.n.e.btinternet.co.uk/HideEnds.pdf Aurora: yes I do GinaS: hi RVer Cynthia: that technique might work to hide the end.... picotsnkeys: I think I would give up and use the end as a string to hang it ;) epope: Hi RVer AKTATTER: http://www.e.n.e.btinternet.co.uk/Encapsulation.pdf Winkerbill joined the chat 6 hours ago Winkerbill: hi everyone Aurora: I´ve tried that G, but it´s not for shuttle tatting, and the core thread it´s thicker than the working thread looks horrible picotsnkeys: Hi Steph! picotsnkeys: love your variations for today GinaS: hi stephanie! epope: Hi Steph GinaS: I found my Hat! The knitted lace one Dorcas Ann: Hi, Winderbill AKTATTER http://www.georgiaseitz.com/rodgers/mt.gif AKTATTER http://www.georgiaseitz.com/rodgers/mt2.gif Winkerbill: hey, cool! Got a picture Gina? Cynthia: could you split the thread and work it in going 2 ways? Aurora: magic thread trick picotsnkeys: that's an idea Cyn picotsnkeys: that way it wouldn't be so thick! GinaS: yes I'll send them to you Winkerbill: wouldn't splitting the thread make it fray? Aurora: Cyn, maybe, I´ve not tried, AKTATTER: see the dental floss loop in this photo http://georgiaseitz.com/2007/cluny/ruthphangingcluny.pdf Cynthia: I've done it with thicker threads...and used the mt as well. Just for the end and it doesn't have a fray problem when working them in AKTATTER: welcome Steph AKTATTER: every time you split the thread to sew the ends in you are destroying the tensile strength of the thread Winkerbill: don't know how long I'll 'last' today Georgia. Asthma still working its 'magic' on me.... Winkerbill: but I'll hang in there as long as I can sit here. ;-) AKTATTER: if it is something that is important I don't advise it AKTATTER: ah it is the time of year too I suspect AKTATTER: get some tea Steph Winkerbill: I've found floss threaders to be wonderful as 'magic threads,' but only with size 30 thread or smaller. GinaS: here is the doily part I have done https://picasaweb.google.com/112335366107611870182/October102011#5661940186827350818 Aurora: Sorry to know ti Steph. Hope you get well soon GinaS: I just scanned it Winkerbill: Anything bigger than that, and I have too much trouble pulling the ends through. RVer joined the chat 6 hours ago Winkerbill: I've got tea brewing now.....can't tat without tea, and it *does* help breathing, too. GinaS: oh there are dental floss threader loops in the link I just gave Cynthia: just the end gets split so the tensile strength isn't as important right them but yes it does tend to make it easy to break...the end that gets worked in is all that I mean to split GinaS: wb rver GinaS: these puppies are nuts epope: k Winkerbill: puppies.....they're so much fun....sweet, fuzzy babies.... AKTATTER: whenever I ue magic thread trick loops and I think the tatting might be tight, make it a thread that is much thicker than the thread I am tatting with or that it creates a little extra room in the tunnel of the core thread picotsnkeys: Gina....link comes up page not found AKTATTER: johan welcome RV too Cynthia: Gina tried it twice and both times it says page not found AKTATTER: Patty!!! Aurora: well I have to use the imagination, to work with it smark69106 joined the chat 6 hours ago GinaS: I sent it to you stephanie Winkerbill: sometimes I add a 'spacer' thread to the magic thread - a single 'extra' thread that adds more room....pull it out (carefully) first, then do the magic thread trick. GinaS: really? Aurora: that´s true G Cynthia: Steph take care of the lungs it is more important than tatting class...and I deal with it too! picotsnkeys: good idea Winker smark69106: Hi everyone thought I would drop into class again epope: hi AKTATTER: little things like this we learn through trial and error Aurora: But I cant sew between knots AKTATTER: it is gret to see you again Patty Winkerbill: Does anyone know....or have....a 4 or 5-ring cross pattern - something suitable for doo-dads for Palmettos? smark69106: Thank you Georgia nice to be here Cynthia: awesome Idea Wink!! AKTATTER: yes I hve one Winkerbill: Karen...or Joanie...or somebody....was showing one to someone and I can't remember it. picotsnkeys: I have a split ring 6 ring pattern I do for baby blankets the prayer shawl group knits Winkerbill: I think it was 3 or 4 rings plus a split ring and the 'ends' were incorporated into a tassel somehow. Aurora: I have found another way to hide threads but it doesnt work with "this" maltese thick core thread lelia: both patterns would be nice to have available AKTATTER: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2007/ruthpbullionstitchx.pdf picotsnkeys: there's a pic in my NSAN album. If you like it, email me and I'll send it to you Cynthia: Mel could you just post it on nsan? or do we need to get permission first? lelia: thx, will check your NSAN album Winkerbill: whoever was showing the pattern (showing it to someone else and I was sort of halfway looking over their shoulders) said that the person who made up the pattern gave them permission to pass it out and use it for doo-dads. GinaS: ok try this https://plus.google.com/photos/112335366107611870182/albums/5661941433354679105 GinaS: I think I didn't make it public Cynthia: hmmmcould it be one that we got at tat days in the extras? Winkerbill: maybe that was it....maybe it was 4 rings.... Cynthia: several people had them and occasionally they were alos in registration.,...not sure tho RVer: Very pretty, Gina. GinaS: I scanned it on purpose picotsnkeys: that's cool looking Cynthia: awesome Gina.... Winkerbill: Do you have a copy Cynthia? Can you scan it and e-mail it to me? RVer: NSAN? Winkerbill: For the one with the tatted center, I used the 'hole' in the open one to figure out how big to make the picots on the center ring....so they were 'big enough' but not 'too big.' picotsnkeys: clever! Winkerbill: Thought about making them a little bigger and twisting hte picots when I joined them, but ran out of time.... AKTATTER THIS DIAGRAM HAS THE DS COUNT http://www.georgiaseitz.com/public/emmyliebert/elfig24dscount.jpg mariaalcantara: the omega´s page G! Aurora: pretty work picotsnkeys: k Judy: Lots of options. mariaalcantara: that lace I have to practice, tatt is better for me! GinaS: I sent it to the address on the Contact page Maria epope: I loooooooooove the green version AKTATTER: AT FIRST THIS MOTIF LOOKED LIKE TWO ROUNDS OF RINGS TO ME Judy: looks like a green apple GinaS: hi caroline and riet! Winkerbill: Georgia - in the original translation you translated those 'outer' chains as 'half closed rings.' That's what gave it the sort of 3-d effect in the center.... Winkerbill: Gina I don't have them anymore....we used them at Tat Days to sew to things.... Aurora: ahhh I didnt mind it Steph Winkerbill: I'll go check the book...brb.... AKTATTER: AH YOU ARE RIGHT AKTATTER: SO CLOSER STUDY REVEALED THAT IT IS NOT JUST CHAINS ON THE OUTSIDE mariaalcantara: are they half closed rings? AKTATTER: IT IS A ROUND OF HALF CLOSED RINGS Cynthia: but wouldn;'t you join on the back with chains? or am I off in lala land? GinaS: where does the split ring come in? Riet de B-engel: That is the problem, I have the original books at home in dutch but not here picotsnkeys: so, you can still climb out from the round of closed rings using the picot the half closed rings join to? AKTATTER: OK IN THIS MOTIF Judy: I think the dimensional feel is enhanced by putting that last round behind the first one... letting the picots in front do the work. Like the snowflake with the massed picots center. GinaS: And how do you fasten half closed rings with split rings? AKTATTER: BEGIN WITH ONE OF THE RINGS IN THE CENTER AKTATTER: IT WILL HAVE ONE PICOT TO WHICH THE OTHER 4 RINGS WILL JOIN Aurora: Gina, that´s a good question AKTATTER: LEAVE A BARE THREAD SPACE Winkerbill: found it....original p. 16, I think, p. 14 in my book? talking about the outer roung.... AKTATTER: LARGER RING R 3 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 3 Judy: Can't you finish the last outer ring (round one) where it would join with the first ring, with a split ring, and jump to the HCR from there? Riet de B-engel: The 4ring is not totaly closed AKTATTER: LEAVE BARE THREAD SPACE AKTATTER: REPEAT INNER RING JOINING TO FIRST PICOT Riet de B-engel: translation for germany tekst Winkerbill: Riet there is a copy of the book in Dutch online....let me see if I can find it.... AKTATTER: CONTINUE AROUND, THEN USING THE LONG TAIL MAKE A SPLIT RING OUT INTO THE LST ROW AKTATTER: LAST RING IS SPLIT RING BUT AKTATTER: IT MUST BE AN ASYMMETRAIL SPLIT RING Winkerbill: Try this one Riet: AKTATTER: SO THE SPLIT RING WOULD BE MADE USING THAT LONG TAIL AGAIN Winkerbill: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/public/emmyliebert/liebertbk1reprint.pdf mariaalcantara: ok.
