Marie Smith: I have been shuttle tatting 45 years, but needle tatting 1 year. Marie Smith: It is getting hot here. About 90 today. Thought it would rain, but it has not yet. Bernice: I tried shuttle a bit years ago and started needle this past winter but haven't gotten far. I really like the needle though. Bernice: It is only in the 60's here and will rain tomorrow if not today. Marie Smith: I still prefer the shuttle, bacause that is what I am used to, but the needle has been fun. AKTATTER: May 24, 2010 needle tatting afternoon session Bernice: I am having the most trouble with adding more thread when I run out. AKTATTER: are you tatting with a ball thread or a cut thread? Bernice: Both Bernice: but my trouble is when I run out of the cut AKTATTER: ok i fyou are using a cut thread then you must plan the tatting out a little more carefully AKTATTER: first of all when you use a cut thread it usually means that you are tatting a small motif AKTATTER: perhaps just one or two rows AKTATTER: the trick it s do try out one "repeat" of a pattern first measuring the amount of cut thread AKTATTER: let's say you cut a piece 2 yds long AKTATTER: you tat one repeat and you have 1.5 yds left AKTATTER: now determine how many repeats are in themotif AKTATTER: lets say it takes a total of 4 repeats to complete the pattern AKTATTER: so now when you do the actual piece you know that 2 yds is enough, but for safety sake always add on a little bit AKTATTER: got that part? AKTATTER: for example, let's say you are tatting a ring and chain repeat AKTATTER: you see that you are nearly to the end of the carrying cord AKTATTER: if you were thinking ahead, you will have already cut off a new carrying cord from the ball AKTATTER: before you actually started tatting the piece AKTATTER: if not it is wise to have an extra ball on hand. I finally read in Foster's book that you tie after every ring and chain. So I've done that. About the only time I don't tie now is when I'm doing split rings on top of split rings.
