AKTATTER: I am going over to see if anyone needs help to get into the classroom, will you hold the fort for me, Bernice? Bernice: Ok this is my first time at the needle session AKTATTER: well gosh I am glad to see you here Bernice. Have you already learned needle tatting or are you a beginnier? AKTATTER: do you have your supplies already? Bernice: I did a little shuttle years ago. Started Needle this past winter and attended 3 thursday classes and 2 this session AKTATTER: ok then have you a particular question about needle tatting? Bernice: Have only done a little and kind of know some basics AKTATTER: make you make a ring, a chain, and can you join ? AKTATTER: can you Bernice: Can't think of anything off hand. Yes I can. Have problems knowing how much thread to leave through the needle when starting AKTATTER: there is a simple guide, if working from a cut piece of thread, pull thru the eye 1/3 of the yarn AKTATTER: if working from the ball, then do a test repeat seeing how much thread is needed in the eye, then mutliply by the number of repeats AKTATTER: however, you also must take into consideration the fact that the more thiimes you pull thru th thread AKTATTER: the more "frayed" it becomes. Bernice: Ok that helps AKTATTER: since it is so easy to add on new thread, you will soon come to find a happy medium for yourself when working larger pieces. Bernice: So what is easy about adding new thread? AKTATTER: you can add thread anywhere you need to. AKTATTER: you can hide the ends inside the "tunnel" created by the carrying cord Bernice: Do you use a square knot? AKTATTER: no I don't I sew in the ends or use the magic thread trick for shuttle tatting Bernice: So the ends aren't knoted at all? AKTATTER: look here http://www.frontiernet.net/~TammyRodgers/lilys_way.html AKTATTER: nope no knots Bernice: ok I had seen the illustration before but guess I assumed it also had a knot. Thanks Cynthia from x.x.x.183 joined the chat 7 hours ago Cynthia: Hi everyone... AKTATTER: welcome Cynthia Elipand from x.x.x.56 joined the chat 7 hours ago Bernice: hi Elipand: hello AKTATTER: just work the ends thru a full chain and it wil be safe AKTATTER: hello Elaine Elipand: hello Bernice: ok Cynthia: I made it. I have found that if I do at least 10 stitches or sew in at least that far I don't have a problem with the ends coming out. I have used that on hankies and tshirts that are in the wash weekly and no loose ends...just my experience Bernice: Ok I will try it Elipand: k Cynthia: Bernice I do tend to tat very tight even with a needle--I do both--and the technique works for both. Cynthia: Hi Elipand... Elipand: hi Cynthia: Bernice are you having any difficulty with the shuttle? the flip can be the hardest part AKTATTER: any needle tatting questions?? Bernice: I am only doing needle now. Tried shuttle years ago and didn't like it. Tried again the other day and still like the needle better. Cynthia: everyone is different. I started on shuttle and then switched but prefer shuttle...especially now that I found a technique that is easier for my arthritic wrist... Bernice: The needle doesn't seem to bother the arthritis in my thumb as much AKTATTER: whatever method works for you is ok! lucette from x.x.x.127 joined the chat 6 hours ago Cynthia: A question fromthe beginner class...how do you do a lock join with the needle? I had a blank...some days it just goes that way... lucette: hello the tatters good afternoon for you Bernice: I was wondering also Cynthia: Hi Lucette...I have a fan about 1/2 done with a black and white variegated thread Bernice: hi Lucette lucette: I am very glad to see your fan cynthia hello bernice AKTATTER: bienvenue! HI ya Yuma Tatter from x.x.x.27 joined the chat 6 hours ago AKTATTER: same - o same o lucette: good in french georgia Yuma Tatter: Hello everyone! AKTATTER: just put the needle thru the hole AKTATTER: the point of attachment AKTATTER: pull up the loop AKTATTER: and slip the needle thru the loop and remove slack but AKTATTER: down and dirty way is to just stick the needle thru the spot where you need the join. AKTATTER: merci Lucette! AKTATTER: yuma was it really 99 degrees in AZ yesterday? Elipand: k Cynthia: I'll get it posted as soon as I get it done AKTATTER: hard to believe Hope was reportin that lucette: oh la la !! c'est formidable georgia !! il faut apprendre le français lucette: ok cinthia Yuma Tatter: Actually, I'm now in Indiana :-) and it's raining and in the 50s... almost wish I were back in Yuma! Rosemarie: Hi All Susan: hi everyone lucette: the tatted nativity scene is very nice Cynthia: I've begun using the Reverse Reigo...I don't have to twist the wrist that way Yuma Tatter: that's what I'm resorting to, but if there's a way to tat that's easier on the wrist.... Raelara: Reverse Riego??? AKTATTER: there is a glove that you can get that is stretchy, needle workers's glove I had one before we moved it helps AKTATTER: hello Jenni , sue and Rosemarie Cynthia: did I misspell it? Raelara: hello Bernice: Reverse Riego? Susan: I wore a wrist splint to sleep in and it helped Susan: Hi Georgia. Did you get my pattern? Cynthia: I found it in the Rebecca Jones book and now use it about 90% of the time...25+years of other method...well AKTATTER: hmm let me look? Raelara: can you give us a brief description Cynthia?? Cynthia: the muscle memory just keeps going and going and going Raelara: never heard of it Yuma Tatter: Is there a website that shows this Reverse Riego method? AKTATTER: we ought to post a photo of the reverse riego method Cynthia: It is easy. The ring hand is the same. Cynthia: there was a video on youtube but I didn't find it when I was looking the other day AKTATTER: seahorse pattern #2? got it Elipand: k Susan: ok. good, just wanted to check because there were storms that day, and sometimes things get lost... Bernice: k Cynthia: holding the shuttle in the right hand put the thread over the back of the left hand and tuck the shuttle behind the front thread and thru let the thread drop off your fingers and pull tight--the flip happens... claudia from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 6 hours ago claudia: hi georgia! claudia: hi girls! claudia: class has started? AKTATTER: I think we all did Steph Rosemarie from x.x.x.15 joined the chat 6 hours ago Winkerbill: mostly learned that I do great when I'm tatting, terrible when I'm trying to put together something without a picture of what it needs to look like. ;-) claudia: do you know georgia, how is this method called? Yuma Tatter: k Cynthia: either reversed or this way works. Yes it is in the rebecca jones book Rosemarie: If this isn't the reverse R method. I apologize. But it is another way to hold the thread to make the stitches. Again, sorry for the mistake. AKTATTER: I watch the video again it is the reverse riego method as shown in the Rebercca Jones books AKTATTER: but Winkerbill: My "plan A" seemed too plain, so I off-centered the 5-sided star....then decided I needed "something more" in there....and kept adding "stuff" until it looked ....well....too much stuff, I think. ;-) AnneB from x.x.x.159 joined the chat 6 hours ago Elipand: k Winkerbill: But there's sparkly thread and glow in the dar thread and all sorts of "fun" stuff..... Raelara: BUT i WAS MORE CONCERNED WITH GETTING IT DONE FOR CHRISTMAS THAN KEEPING TRACK OF HOW LONG IT TOOK AKTATTER: I THINKTHE TATTNG GOES FASTER THAN YOU THINK Sandyc: Thank you! Love the patterns! Well done. Suz: Thanks...I think this will make a great gift for my sisters! Raelara: THIS WAS MY MOM'S CHRISTMAS GIFT AKTATTER: TWO LOADS OF LAUNDRY IS A GOOD WAY TO JUDGE Raelara: ANY QUESTIONS ON COUCHING DOWN, OR ANYTHING ELSE??? Cynthia: last Christmas or this coming one? Raelara: THIS PAST CHRISTMAS Lilome: It's beautiful I'm thinking of some Christmas cards for tatters Suz: nope...I know how to embrodery AKTATTER: ARE THERE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FOR JENNI? Cynthia: just wondering how long you have been hiding your teaching talent! Raelara: ONE IMPORTANT THING ABOUT COUCHING IT DOWN, THAT I FORGOT TO MENTION TO THE LAST CLASS Sandyc: How large is the hoop/frame it's in? AKTATTER: OK? Katie V: Again, Jenni, thanks so much for the patterns and for helping us understand them--I'll have many few snafus now! Raelara: IF YOU USE A FABRIC WITH A LOOSE WEAVE, IRON ON SOME FUSIBLE INTERFACING BEFORE YOU START SEWING Raelara: NOT AFTER LIKE I DID FOR THIS EXAMPLE Raelara: THE HOOP IS ABOUT 8", i THINK Cynthia: ooohhh good idea! that would give it a bit more body... Raelara: IT ALSO PREVENTS THE COUCHING FROM PULLING THE THREADS OF THE FABRIC OUT AND CREATING LITTLE HOLES AKTATTER: MY GOODNESS JENNI COVERED A LOT OF TECHNIQUES IN THIS LESSON DIDN'T SHE? Raelara: ANYONE DIZZY??? dharts04: Thank you Jenni! AKTATTER: <<<<< ME! Gail: Great lesson, Jenni Katie V: a tour de force!
