Susan: mine have green stems but no flowers yet Elipand: hi Susan: no malcantara: thank you G! malcantara: no Elipand: question:If you are doing a collar (shuttle) and come to the end, would you tie (then what type of a tie), or just hiding the end of threads would be enough.Would it hold? AKTATTER: ok please see i fyo ucan view this photo http://beadntat.multiply.com/photos/album/1#photo=4 Winkerbill from x.x.x.209 joined the chat 2 days ago AKTATTER: it is on multiply and I do not know ifyou must be a member to view it or not AKTATTER: P E does the collar form a complete circle or does it unfasten to come off? AKTATTER: welcome steph Susan: I see it AKTATTER: great what a pretty color thjread it is, it is surprising how the choice of color can perk up even the simplest of designs Elipand: It will be stitched permanantly to the blouse AKTATTER: if I am attaching lace to fabric , I often use the thread tail to do the sewing down Elipand: thanks for the idea Susan: there are several pics of her tatting AKTATTER: if not then I would hide the ends. But if this is to be laundered then extra care must be made to stitch down the section where the ends are hidden Elipand: thanks AKTATTER: E that idea is one of the first tips I found in the first antique German tatting books I ever saw. It was a great way to deal with the ends. Winkerbill: hi everyone! Got my tea and tatting stuff! AKTATTER: yes deb has an album there AKTATTER: any needle tatting questions? AKTATTER: hi terri Winkerbill: I've quit using the thread tail to sew lace to fabric. The thread seems less durable than plain old 'sewing' thread, so not I hide my ends and attach with sewing thread. Susan: That's how I attached my tatting to my quilt squares, too, taking the ends through the material and securing on the back Winkerbill: now....not 'not' Winkerbill: I need to sew the tatting to my square.....too bad we don't have a magic wand to wave over the tatting and fabric to instantly sew it on.....would give us more time for tatting. ;-) Susan: and then using regular thread to sew the tatting in place AKTATTER: wow I have never heard anyone say that tatting thread is less durable!! Susan: too true AKTATTER: oh so Susan did both ways. AKTATTER: please stand by Susan: some tatting threads I've found are stronger--they don't break Winkerbill: in my 'early' days of tatting I sewed edgings to *everything* - towels, facecloths, bed linens....you name it....especially kitchen towels....the thread wore out and hte tatting....still in great shape....fell off. ;-) Susan: interesting Winkerbill: after the "early" edgings started falling off I decided I'd better use good quality sewing thread. Elipand: k Susan: never heard that before. I wonder why the thread was weaker than the tatting.... Winkerbill: Still would prefer a magic wand, though.... <silly grin> AKTATTER: gosh that tornado alarm makes my heart pound everytime it goes off AKTATTER: thank good ness it is just a severe thunderstorm warning this time BahmaTerri from x.x.x.39 joined the chat 2 days ago BahmaTerri: Hi everyone malcantara: .... Winkerbill: tatting is knotted....my guess is it helps 'protect' and strengthen the core thread....but when used to sew it on, the core thread gets *all* the wear and tear from use and washing. Susan: I don't have alarms....must be loud AKTATTER: Steph that is one of the reasons I have alwasy advised tatters to sew on the tatting instead of tatting into the cloth. The fabric and sewing thread do not seem as durable as tatting thread to me Susan: that sounds right Winkerbill: We're still overcast and just 'rainy" here. Forecast is for severe storms, though.... AKTATTER: Susan it will wake everyone up in 2 seconds Susan: ouch skfuller: I remember hearing it too many times in West Michigan Winkerbill: I've only tatted directly onto cloth once, didn't like the extra weight in my hand....so I always sew mine on Susan: a town alarm? skfuller: glad to be in Colorado at this time of year! AKTATTER: yes I hate the false alarms but that one time a tornado is actually out there will beworth it Susan: or a signal on the airwaves? Winkerbill: When I lived in GA I NEVER, EVER heard the tormado siren when it went off. Elipand: k AKTATTER: no out in the country we have NOAA weather alarms Susan: NOAA? Winkerbill: Heard a tornado less than half a mile away once.....now THAT was frightening! It somehow sucked itself back up into the clouds and went away right after I heard it. Whew! skfuller: In W MI it was all the Fire stations plus others around town malcantara: here in Mexico City we donīt know about tornados...so..... AKTATTER: it looks like a clock radio but is tuned to the surrounding counties for reports and when it involves my county or anywhere near it goes off AKTATTER: no tornadoes? wow you are lucky Winkerbill: Oh, so yours isn't a town siren, it's a weather alert radio, then? Winkerbill: People would always call (or come by screaming that the siren just went off in town) and I'd never heard it.... Winkerbill: ;-) Susan: well, it must be nice to have a warning.....where we lived before there was a tornado in the area on several occassions but no one had any warning Winkerbill: Guess I was just too absorbed in studying or something. Susan: and people were injured or otherwise malcantara: we only have earth queke alarms AKTATTER: my neighbors used to call around before teh NOAA days as they had cb and monitored police/fire calls Winkerbill: oh, my....earth quake alarms....that sounds pretty scary.... BahmaTerri: .. AKTATTER: what is the earthquake alarm maria?? Raelara: I like to be able to see the actual fabric ... for some reason that looks crowded to me Raelara: pretty, but crowded Elipand: k Winkerbill: I'm with you, Jenni. I was thinking "simple" was better....see the fabric and the patches better.... ;-) Susan: is that encrusted, or embellished? picotsnkeys: k Cynthia: In case of emergency grab tatting, dog, and hubby's bagpipe....got my priorities.... Barb: I was thinking that some of those little flowers would work good too Raelara: are you thinking you will cover your seams, winker? or stick with your original plan? Winkerbill: I was going to put a small motif in the center of my block ....something that didn't clash with the rest of the block. AKTATTER: SIMPLE PATTERNS http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2008/cc1488leaflet.html Mary_ND: It's the type of piece that you see something new every time you look at it Winkerbill: not sure....might cover part of the seams with something small, might stick with the original plan. Depends on how I like it once I get the center stitched on. BahmaTerri: Thanks Georgia. Those are great edgings! Susan: but it's always good to have simpler areas to rest the eye Raelara: let me know what you decide ... it will help me decide how much to worry about mine Raelara: I covered one seam, but left the rest nstitcher: . Marie Smith: My all time favorite edging is in The Tatter's Treasure Chest Cynthia: Raelara--don't worry be happy...it will be beautiful...I like the easy and the complex they are both needed Barb: Nice edgings . Thanks Georgia AKTATTER: SEVERAL BLOCKS HAVE CENTERS PIECES OF TATTING IN THE HEART BLOCK Winkerbill: which one is that Marie? Talk to all of you later. Marie Smith: I have always just called it my favorite. skfuller: We all have different tastes Raelara, Yours sounds fine Winkerbill: ok, i'll leave the seams empty, then.... ;-) skfuller: there needs to be some variation! Elipand: k Cynthia: some will Raelara... especially as time gets shorter.... Marie Smith: This time I added an extra ring to make a clover on both ends. I just love it. AKTATTER: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2005/fall2005/janeeborallctj.html Winkerbill: brb, got to go look at my Tatters Treasure Chest book.... Mary_ND: I think the most important thing is to have some tatting on each block - We are diverse people and like variety Raelara: reminds me though, I have to write down the patterns for the butterflies I made before I forget claudia: no image in that link georgia Raelara: good thing I have a pic of the block Cynthia: definitely...Georgia, Beth says I should do a fancy butterfly as my plain one is "wimpy..." so I'm redoing that part only... AKTATTER: jANE'S SITE i'L LTELL HER AKTATTER: WIMPY??? WHOA! LOL claudia: is it georgia? skfuller: Could that be from Jane's old site? Cynthia: http://www.e.n.e.btinternet.co.uk/Edging3.pdf is her site and it is a neat pattern Winkerbill: Top one on the same page is nice for hankiies - launders nice and pressing the hankie and edging isn't a big pain in the derriere like it is with *some* patterns.... ;-)_ Marie Smith: It is the edging that convinced a friend that she wanted to tat! AKTATTER: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2002/BridalEdging.htm AKTATTER: THIS EDGING BRINGS UP ANOTHER IDEA BEADS Elipand: k Cynthia: I don't know whe just said the plain butterfly is "wimpy...wimpy...wimpy" so I have to get busy! AKTATTER: BEADS ARE A NATURAL BUT IT DOES TAKE MORE TIME TO TAT WITH THEM AS IN THIS EDGING AKTATTER: BUT WHY NOT JUST DO THE TATTING AND AS YOU SEW DOWN THE PICOTS, ADD THE BEADS AKTATTER: YOU CAN ADD BEDS THAT WAY ANYQHERE Mary_ND: Don't forget that you could add the beads as you sew down your tatting Barb: lol Cynthia: Beth really liked the one I did for her from Ruth's book so I'm doing another of those... Winkerbill: whew, I've gotten 'hooked' on Nina Libin's patterns lately....been stringing beads almost as much as i've been tatting. ;-) But the necklace from one of last fall's classes (I think it was back in the fall) is SO pretty. claudia: i must go now.. thanks for the tips georgia claudia: bye girls claudia: chau maria Barb: Well, I like your little butterfly. :) Susan: bye Cynthia: me too Wink just can't get enough of the edging done that was at hector/lodi AKTATTER: BYW CLUADIA malcantara: chao clau..nos vemos Elipand: I have also to leave, thanks, bye skfuller: I love Nina's 1 up and 1 down beaded technique Winkerbill: wish I could go to Hector....maybe one day. Winkerbill: I like the looks of the 3 up and 1 down, too...makes a pretty diamond shape Winkerbill: and emphasizes the bottom point of a heart.... Gina: where is Palmetto's? skfuller: Yes, I like that way too Cynthia: sure does...but too complex for the cq block at least for me... Susan: too far away....sigh Winkerbill: South Carolina, except the one coming up in August this year is in Toccoa, GA. Gina: oh, when is it? I live in FL Barb: One up and one down beaded technique? Winkerbill: it was such wonderful fun, you can't go just once...you have to keep going back year after year..... Rosemarie: Makes me sorry that I don't sew. Have to go, now. Thanks Georgia. Winkerbill: 3 beads on the thread around your hand, 1 on the core thread Barb. AKTATTER: aUG 27-28 Marie Smith: palmettotatters.org Cynthia: Barb it is Nina Libins benile technique...and fun to do once you understand how putting all those beads on at once goes... AKTATTER: BYE ROSE Barb: Ahh. thanks Wink skfuller: It's actually quite simple Barb Barb: Oh, I haven't read Nina's book. Winkerbill: i still hate working with beads, but the way it looks when you've DONE it makes it worth the hassle (to me!) of all those beads. Cynthia: I'll second that~! Winkerbill: i've been playing with color the last few weeks - thread color vs. bead coilor(s) skfuller: Just move 1 bead into place from the Chain thread (like for a beaded picot nstitcher: . skfuller: and at the same time move 1 into place from the wowrking shuttle thread! malcantara: G a want to get into the mail office on time so..... What if you did a modified version - like a couple of layers? ============================================================ Created at Chatzy.com The Online Tatting Class http://www.chatzy.com/695768390662 Visible content as of Thu May 6 14:57:11 2010 GMT (124 KB) Page 3 of 3 - Char 102541 to 127271 - Newest entries at the bottom ============================================================ erin in tenn.: You know, where it has dimension, but not entirely 3-d? stitchingsharon from x.x.x.62 joined the chat 2 days ago Cynthia: GEORGIA SAID SHE'D POST THEM ALL WHEN THEY WERE IN...i CAN HARDLY WAIT. Cynthia: HI HOPE... erin in tenn.: Hopie-loo! Wally: got it. like my trish flower. http://needles-n-shuttles.com/FlowerTrish.aspx Cynthia: GEORGIA HAD TO DUCK DUE TO A BAD STORM...i'M PINCH HITTING.... Mary_ND: Here's Piece of Machine Lace emblished Mary_ND: Here's Dragonfly - Machine Lace emblished with beads I added a hand dyed lace dragonfly with beads to add some more bling to the needle case. erin in tenn.: Yes, Wally! Or you could turn the blossom sideways, if you wanted to - sort of a fan shape. Mary_ND: http://cjstitchingandblooms.blogspot.com/2009/04/folkart-embroidery-envelope-lavender.html erin in tenn.: Mary, that's beautiful! Lilome: k Mary_ND: I'm still looking for my favorite that has twisted tail stitchingsharon from x.x.x.62 joined the chat 2 days ago Wally: that's a gorgeous needle case! Cynthia: aWESOME IDEAS.... stitchingsharon: computer issues Cynthia: GLAD IT ISN'T A STORM! Sandyc: Very nice!!!! erin in tenn.: What beautiful garden photos, too. That would inspire me to want to sit and stitch all the time! Cynthia: LOTS OF NEAT IDEAS...DO YOU HAVE TO COVER THE SEAM IN ALL OF THEM? THAT WAS A QUESTION EARLIER... Lilome: What beautiful embroidery!! stitchingsharon: Question about sewing. How do you sew on something that has no picots? Mary_ND: I vote for personal choice - Maybe Yes Maybe No hope G from x.x.x.226 joined the chat 2 days ago erin in tenn.: Cynthia, I think part of that depends on the design. For areas with larger pieces I think it's better to embellish. For areas with lots of tiny pieces, it gets a bit busy. skfuller: Do you have ends that could be pulled to the backside and tied? hope G: it is so hard trying to catch up on what has been said already & the screen jumps around by itself... Hi All Sandyc: For sewing, try using very, very fine thread. Cynthia: I JUST USE THE OUTER OR INNER EDGE AND SEW THEM ON i PULL TO THE CENTER IF POSSIBLE BUT IF NOT THEN YES TO THE BACK AND TIE THEM OFF AND HIDE THE END BETWEEN THE LAYWERS Sandyc: After much frustration, I used "Bottom Line" thread and it's almost invisible. Katie V: hi-ho, Hopie!! erin in tenn.: I think it depends also on the fabrics used, too. Are they prints? Large or small? Are there lots of contrasting colors? stitchingsharon: It's an edging -- well bookmark used as edging.... flowers and stems and leaves Sandyc: Hi Hope!!! Cynthia: i AGREE MARY SOME TIMES THE BLOCKS NEED TO BE DEFINED AND SOMETIMES THEY DON'T... hope G: bottom line thread??? erin in tenn.: Cynthia, my dyslexia just kicked in. I was trying to figure out what you were hiding "between the lawyers". hope G: Hey Sandy erin in tenn.: LOL Cynthia: HOPE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE CQ' BLOCKS AND HOW TO DECORATE SO THEY CAN GET skfuller: It also depends on the size of the project hope G: what is bottom line thread Sandy??? Sandyc: Bottom Line is by Superior Threads. I use it as bobbin thread in the embroidery machine. Worked really well. skfuller: smaller projects could get too busy with too many seams covered stitchingsharon: http://www.ringoftatters.org.uk/patterns/jpatterson/jp.html Cynthia: lol OOPS LAYERS THAT SHOULD BE BUT BETWEEN THE LAWYERS COULD BE INTERESTING JUST NOT IN THIS FORUM...LOL Lilome: k Mary_ND: Dragonfly Frame - Love Design - No Lace http://www.amerheritage.com/merchimages/pictureframes/7062-01dragonfly.jpg erin in tenn.: Sharon, I place little teensy stitches where rings and chains meet (you know that non-existent hole where you hopefully have no gaposis?) erin in tenn.: Also where there are joins. stitchingsharon: Thanks Erin -- that sounds like a plan erin in tenn.: Hope, how do you handle sewing down things with no picots? Cynthia: IF NO PICOTS WHERE WOULD THE JOINS BE? JUST ASKING...AS I GET LOST EASILY.... stitchingsharon: or in the joining picots -- OK... I'llhave this block done by the time I go to bed tonight hope G: same way- in the place ring & chain join erin in tenn.: Well, I'm thinking of joining picots rather than decorative. If there were no picots, then I'm thinking you'd have a big, boring chain. hope G: or tack thru the tatting stitch if necessary Mary_ND: I found a dragonfly which had Swavoski Crystals used as emblishment - We could emblish our tatting with them - Believe these are the iron on ones like I've seen at JoAnn's http://www.punchwithjudy.com.au/shop/hatched-in-africa-dragonfly-jewels.html erin in tenn.: That may be what I get for trying to think. Cynthia: sUE i AGREE IF THE PROJECT IS SMALLER OR HAS LOTS OF PIECES THEN COVERING EACH SEAM WOULD GET INCREDIBLY BUSY stitchingsharon: there are joining picots, just not decorative picots erin in tenn.: Hope, I hadn't thought to do that. I usually sneak in a stitch over the chain and through a "waistband" if I need to. erin in tenn.: I like picots, though. erin in tenn.: Not everyone does. hope G: do you know I left you with NO NEEDLE in hand... and could not stitch lol erin in tenn.: Oh, no erin in tenn.: I have about a gazillion, too. Cynthia: THAT IS TERRIBLE....i'D GO CRAZY... hope G: lol... tat did not help!! erin in tenn.: You don't carry one in your "standard tatting kit"? Lilome: k hope G: didn't have... Cynthia: BRB hope G: Sandy- what are you up to??? erin in tenn.: I sent hope with the blocks to Georgia's. One still needed stuff sewn on. I picked out a bunch of stuff so she could finish in the car on the way to Georgia's. erin in tenn.: So much for that grand plan! hope G: lol but I sure saw redbuds!!! Sandyc: Hi Hope. Yikes!! I got pressured into teaching some new students. erin in tenn.: Well, now I know what you did when you got there! hope G: way to go!!! hope G: AMEN erin in tenn.: Did Georgia have needles? hope G: oh yes... Sandyc: By the time I finish my "handout" it will become an entire book!!! So much to share! erin in tenn.: That's great, Sandy! hope G: lol... you go Sandy!! hope G: how many lessons??? stitchingsharon: new tatters! way to go Sandy Sandyc: I've never done "a group" before, just individuals. erin in tenn.: Bring them into the borg. Sandyc: 3 sessions of 3 hours each. Bernice from x.x.x.68 joined the chat 2 days ago skfuller: That's how my 1st book got started! hope G: WOW!!! Sandyc: Selfish motivation --get a new group going. Wally: was looking for an example for sewing a motif without picots. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_54PxtbTMQSA/S5_-brAZYcI/AAAAAAAABhc/iOJM2XZDr68/s1600-h/giveaway.jpg Bernice: Is this the place for the new needle tatters? hope G: Katie- how is your square going?? Bernice: So I guess I missed it erin in tenn.: Are you having salmon? hope G: YES.... ummmmm... skfuller: I'm in C olorado it's 7:22 erin in tenn.: Chef Jerome prepared chicken bonbons. Sandyc: Hey! Cynthia: BYE SANDY hope G: Bye Sandy Lilome: k erin in tenn.: Bye, Sandy! Show it off at Yarn club Tuesday evening, and out in the mail on WEds or Thurs. Cynthia: OOOHHH FOR THE WAY WE COVER THEM? hope G: glad it arrived safely Wally Bernice: k stitchingsharon: I got some help arranging things from the gals at Yarn Club last month Cynthia: I HOPE TO HAVE MINE OUT ON FRIDAY...BUT HAVING TO REDO THE BUTTERFLY SO IT ISN'T SO WIMPY...
