Margaret: hi, Stephanie Susan: hi Cynthia: what is the specific question Margaret, maybe I can help you figure out the solution AnneB: Hi Stephanie Cynthia: Hi Stephanie AKTATTER: ok did Lucette make it in? malcantara: Hi cyn! and steph too... Margaret: Cynthia, I have six questions, most of which are project-specific Winkerbill: hi Georgia! Cynthia: don't think so... Margaret: welcome back, Georgia malcantara: did you recived my mail....with pictures? AnneB: No Lucette yet Cynthia: Georgia is here now....ask away it may help me teach needle.... AKTATTER: ok let me invite her again she is the guest teacher Margaret: I was supposed to go today to my former employer's house to scan my brooch but it is not done AKTATTER from x.x.x.242 sent out an invitation 7 hours ago Margaret: Georgia, first of all, how does one do mock picot in needle, AKTATTER: Margaret lets do the general questions first please AKTATTER: ok the mock picot is nothing but a space Margaret: I tried just doing what I think is a SLT, but it does not hold AKTATTER: it is a length of bare thread left from both threads, the ball and teh needle thread malcantara: only give a space befor you go on.... AKTATTER: you simply begin the next ds without snugging it up to the previous work Margaret: this pattern starts with a ring with 7 picots, clr, and then make a mock picot to make another section on the rign Cynthia: SLT=shoe lace trick you do a soft half knot like the start of tyine a shoe and it is not a hard knot Winkerbill: if i'm doing a ring next, that works, but if I'm doing a chain, I get a picot unless I tie a knot....when I use the needle, that is. AKTATTER: if the mock picot leads to a ring you do not need to slt or tie it off Winkerbill: so I tie a knot.... Margaret: so I am closing the ring by making the 'teardrop' and then making a space for the next chains Cynthia: just leave a small space equal to the size of a picot AKTATTER: if the mock picot leads to a chain you should do a lock stitch as the first stitch of the chain or do theslt Margaret: the only ring in this pattern is the first one Winkerbill: when a chain comes next, that is. Margaret: how do I do a lock stitch in needle? Winkerbill: hmmm...i think that must be what I'm doing when I tie that knot, then....a lock stitch and a regular stitch...somehow. Winkerbill: ;-) Margaret: when I make the space with the SLT, it doesn't hold tight until I am around on the first round AKTATTER: you hold the ball thread taut AKTATTER: use the needle to wrap a hs around the ball thread Margaret: this pattern is one ring, followed by six rounds of chains, Susan: i do a right-over left and thru, then a left over right and tighten AKTATTER: then use the ball thread to wrap a hs onto the needle slide it off and snug it up thencontinue the pattern Margaret: the ring has eight sections, and each round of chains has one more bead in it than the previous round Margaret: I am writing down your instructions AKTATTER: remember the log is posted after class tonight also or you can print it out using the save/print button on the upper left of the screen Cynthia: if you have a working printer....lol Margaret: k AKTATTER: well yes that helps! AKTATTER: anyone else have a needle tatting question? Margaret: thanks Georgia for the detailed instructions on lock join, I can do one very easily now Margaret: I have five more questions, Georgia Cynthia: I used the last of my ink getting Lucette's pattern printed out...now to the store for ink! malcantara: G i send you my homework......do you recived it? Margaret: When working with metallic thread and a plain carrying cord, how do you start? AKTATTER: just now AKTATTER: I amposting it Margaret: I have been lying the plain thread alongside the needle and taking my crochet hook and pulling it thru the first ds wrapped on the needle AKTATTER: use the metallic thread for the wrapping AKTATTER: the plain threas is thru the eye of the needle malcantara: thank you! once more....hahhaahaha Margaret: I am wrapping wiht the metallic, I just didn't know how to get the plain inside the metallic to begin Margaret: this way when I pull on the needle, the plain thread is connected to the metallic and a ring forms AKTATTER: margaret look at the ring is the plain thread the core thread? and is the metallic thread showing on the outside? Cynthia: you thread the plain thru the eye of the needle then use the metalic to wrap the stitches on. The plain will slide into the metalic when you slide the wrapped stitches onto the plain thread. You can tie the threads together to make a ring. That's how I do it anyway...am I wrong Georgia? AKTATTER: maria it is beautiful!!!!!!!! Margaret: yes Winkerbill: is it posted yet? Winkerbill: brb...i'v got to go look! AKTATTER: working Margaret: Cynthia that is good only for a chain (at least when I try it) and I am starting with the only ring in the pattern AKTATTER: then it is just as it should be margaret all is ok Margaret: am I doing a true ring or a scmr to start? AKTATTER: ok http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2010/ma... Angela from x.x.x.26 joined the chat 6 hours ago malcantara: THANK YOU G!!!!!! AKTATTER: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2010/ma... Margaret: I know I saw a link in these lessons that showed how one can start with true ring off the ball and I am attempting that AnneB: Oooo - It is lovely Maria! AKTATTER: yes you do the tie off just like normal after a ring Margaret: on my first many tries, the carrying cord did not pull thru when I tightened the ring and now they are? any suggestions? malcantara: thank anne Winkerbill: oh, that is beautiful Maria! Cynthia: awesome Maria! Winkerbill: and the colors are perfect! One of my favorite combinations! malcantara: thanks girls!!!! Gina: wow that is beautiful maria! Winkerbill: brb....have to get my tea....it should be ready now. Angela: It is beautiful, maria AKTATTER: ok malcantara: black is beautifull...but is hard to tatt AKTATTER: i wish i had a photo to show you margaret AKTATTER: i will looK Cynthia: Margaret you probably need to adjust the tension to get it to work right...you do have to tension both threads to make it work... Susan from x.x.x.232 joined the chat 6 hours ago Margaret: is there an alternative to using paper clips when starting a chain with a tiny picot(tp)? Susan: very nice Maria! Margaret: the paper clips get in the way of the threads and complicate matters Cynthia: that is the challenge I have in needle tatting....getting both tensions correct.... malcantara: do you have the pattern link? margaret so i can try to help? Cynthia: You can lay a spare/waste thread thru the tiny picot instead of the paperclip AKTATTER: MINI SAFETY PIN? Margaret: the pattern was given out at Cambridge Tat Days by Gina Brummett who included it in her lesson on tatting with beads' AKTATTER: OR JUST A LOOP OF THIN THREAD AKTATTER from x.x.x.242 sent out an invitation 6 hours ago AKTATTER: LUCETTE IS TRYING VERY HARD TO JOIN US Margaret: and my scanner is now working so I can't email it to you, Georgia Margaret: I will try the threads Tine from x.x.x.36 joined the chat 6 hours ago Margaret: two more questions Tine: hello all AKTATTER: OK SURE AKTATTER: ANY ONE ELSE HAVE NEEDLE TATTING QUESTIONS TODAY? Margaret: now it is Tine: has class started already? Margaret: what am I doing wrong? AKTATTER: WE ARE WORKING ON NEEDLE TATTING QUESTIONS Winkerbill: i'm back.... Tine: Hi Georgia Margaret: I was finished round five (of six) when I realized in the middle I had turned around and gone back on round 5 AKTATTER: IF THE METALLIC THREAD IS LOOSE YOU WILL HAVE TO BE GENTLE WITH PULLING THRU THE CARRYING CORD Margaret: I cut it off and started over Tine: ok Margaret: Georgia, if I scan what I did, and email it to you, can you tell me how I could cut and repair it so I could finish round five properly and do round six and have a second back finished? AKTATTER: AT LAST!! FOUND IT! HERE YOU GO MARGARET STUDY THIS PAGE PLEASE http://www.georgiaseitz.com/nt/JNT/... AKTATTER: OF COURSE MARGARET GLAD TO TRY IT FOR YOU Susan: sometimes, Margaret, the ball thread can get caught within the ring, and will not pull through. That happens to me. AKTATTER: THE PURPLE CORD IS THE CARRYING COARD MARGARET YOU CAN SEE IT IS DOUBLED Cynthia: Is it Gina Brummetts Beaded Blossom Brooch? Margaret: yes to both Georgia and Cynthia AKTATTER: THE BLACK CORD WOULD BE THE FANCY TEXTURE FLUFFY FIBER OR METALLIC THREAD WHICH IS WRAPPED ONTO THE NEEDLE Cynthia: it is in her patterns folder...warning ning is closing its free site shortly... Gina: okay Cynthia: If I remember it has split chains--I finally mastered them--beads and blocking Gina: yes Cynthia: I'd say split chains as beads are easy and blocking makes sense when you do it Gina: I have done split chains Gina: I haven't had anything to block really Gina: just little pieces Gina: I'm working on some of the motifs from the minitats book Cynthia: so that shouldn't be a problem! Blocking is useful when you use thread that isn't as good as you'd like it to be Cynthia: it is fairly easy Gina: for an exchange on one of my email lists Cynthia: that is typically when I block tatting as well. also big projects that tend to get wadded up in my tatting bag sometimes need to be blocked Gina: it's a crazy quilt list and i'm in an exchange for motifs Cynthia: Did we lose Bonnie completely? The advanced class can be a scary class when you are a newbie and don't even understand the terms Cynthia: Many of us have been there and understand... Gina: i wish I could make that fan Gina: but I'm definitely not that good yet Cynthia: Gina remember is is done 1 ds at at time....What thread are you using mostly? Gina: lizbeth 20 Gina: she said it was done in olympic 40 Gina: I have some white 40 Cynthia: that usually doesn't have to be blocked much at all as it lays well and is crisp even when you have to take it out several times... Gina: cebelia Cynthia: I find Cebelia to be a bit soft and I like the crisper Lizbeth a lot better Gina: me too Gina: I like lizbeth a lot and want to order some 40 Cynthia: If you make the fan in Lizbeth 20 it will be bigger than if made with 40 but it will still come out nice--make the joining picots small--just big enough to get the hook thru to do the joins Gina: okay Cynthia: The lizbeth 40 will feel very tiny to you and if you have trouble with it fraying put it away until you are a bit more practiced at tatting then try it again Gina: okay Gina: well I better get going Cynthia: I'm wanting to try it in 160 to see how it would work for an earring--maybe not quite as many arms Gina: thank you for the advice! Gina: bye now Gina: oh my Cynthia: bye Gina. Gina: 160 Gina: tiny!
