Winkerbill: I thought this was our pattern designer, but don't remember seeing anything but the lesson before class...I've been sick...haven't done much "computering" for the last week.
Winkerbill: Wow! No wonder everybody is asleep!
AKTATTER: tatting is just the thing to get you better
Winkerbill: You know, I was SO sick, I didn't tat for about 30 hours!!!
Vinnie: That's a long time surely!
Winkerbill: I'm doing better now....
Winkerbill: and tatting again.
Vinnie: about needle tatting, if I may ask,
Vinnie: I'm not very fond of the loose ds you get when you do it, you know the shuttle gives such a tight knot
AKTATTER: yes the shuttle gives a great result but
AKTATTER: there are needle tatters whose work is so good it is hard to tell it apart
Vinnie: and I just can't keep my rings and chains straight!
AKTATTER: it all depends on how well the diameter of the needle and the thread are matched
AKTATTER: because the ds are wrapped around a hard object, the needle,
AKTATTER: when they slide onto the soft thread there is always a looseness
Vinnie: maybe because everytime you close a ring you have to do a kind of SLT, if talking in terms of the shuttle
AKTATTER: shuttle tatting wraps thread around wrap and that is why it is no neat
AKTATTER: so nest
AKTATTER: argh... typos are the bane of my existence
AKTATTER: so neat
Vinnie: can't yet get myself to change over
Winkerbill: Why would you want to change to needle tatting?
AKTATTER: yes why change? I mean we all learn it and it is god for beading tatting and using fat fluffy metallis or textured fibers but shuttle tatting remains the best to me
Vinnie: some of the needle tatting works look so wonderful and neat

Winkerbill: Ah, yes, I understand. I have a book of snowflake designs and one of them is lovely.....but you have to use the needle, because there are woven bare thread spaces in it.
Vinnie: definitely gives the result a softer feel and like AKTATTER says any kind of fibre can be used
Winkerbill: I prefer my shuttle, though, and can do ....anything but weave into those little thread spaces with my shuttle.
AKTATTER: have you seen the homework posted this week? Dagmar has done wonders
Winkerbill: oh, I DID see that! What lovely tatting!!!
Vinnie: I gave it a try in the winters with wool ( I had the knitting bug then!)

Winkerbill: I have tatted with some strange fibers occasionally....usually by using a smooth thread on the shuttle and using the textured thread on the ball. SCMRs give me the "rings" and it looks like it's been tatted with the textured stuff, but I know better.... ;-)

Winkerbill: which explains why the pattern uses size 10 thread and makes a good-sized doily. I've been playing around with size 80 and size 100 threads just for fun.

Winkerbill: If you can work up to an hour (broken into smaller hunks if necessary) of 'vigorous' type exercise a day, it helps a lot.
