Rosemarie from x.x.x.232 joined the chat 89 minutes ago AKTATTER: hi Rosemarie: Hi, I think I'm a little early AKTATTER: well this is the needle tatting session not to worry any questions? Rosemarie: Yes. I'm shuttle tatting Jane's Hipp, but I was wondering how would I SS with a needle? Rosemarie: I meant Hippo AKTATTER: it depends on what happens next Susan from x.x.x.232 joined the chat 86 minutes ago AKTATTER: welcome susan Susan: hi AKTATTER: if you are throwing off a floating ring from a chain then you will need a second needle AKTATTER: if you are using a cut piece of thread then you may be using the tail end instead of the regular spot AKTATTER: or it may mean to unthread the eye fo the needle and use it towrap as in a split ring AKTATTER: ok? AKTATTER: any questions Susan? Rosemarie: I'll need to think about it more. Susan: no, not now...haven't done the practice for tonight's class Susan: I've been working on that fancy picot AKTATTER: ah the one ring pattern, that is a doozy for shuttle tatters and needle tatters Susan: and re'tatting the heart AKTATTER: oh which fancy picot? the daisy picot? AKTATTER: ah yes even Gina retatted the heart AKTATTER: welcome Mary Susan: no, the one I sent you of the trellis, apparently it's a fancy picot stitch I stumbled on by accident AKTATTER: ah the trellis I see your note about it. AKTATTER: I think it is totaly cool Susan: I'm pleased with it so far AKTATTER: and what if you made it ina curcular piece and stiffened it into a basket? like Esater basket? Susan: that's a great idea! AKTATTER: welcome paula AKTATTER: and if it were lined, you could make a bride's bag out of it maybe Susan: I'll have to think about that. How would I stiffen it? Susan: cool AKTATTER: aleen's fabric stiffener, starch or sugar water paulaw from x.x.x.102 joined the chat 77 minutes ago paulaw: hello all Susan: wouldn't the starch darken over time? AKTATTER: also dilutd white glue and even hair spray works Susan: or the sugar water go mouldy? AKTATTER: yellowing is possible with any stifffening agent I fear but that fabric one is made for thread. AKTATTER: haven't heard of mold problem but have heard sugar water method attracts ants Susan: okay, thanks, Georgia. Something to think about. I've been playing with the stitch and have made several things so far. AKTATTER: Paula any needle tatting questions tonight? paulaw: only thing I have been wondering is how you finish a pillowcase edge and how you attach a tatted edging? AKTATTER: finish as to join the ends of a circule piece? AKTATTER: or tomake a header to which to sew the fabric of the pillowcase? Wally from x.x.x.78 joined the chat 73 minutes ago Wally: Hi all! Rosemarie: k paulaw: yes, a header to sew the fabric to the pillowcase Katie Verna/occhitat from x.x.x.135 joined the chat 73 minutes ago Katie Verna/occhitat: Hi, tatters. Good to be here. AKTATTER: welcome katie! AKTATTER: hi ya Wally AKTATTER: ok Paula I have heard of (but not actually tried) this method for making regularly
spaced holes for attaching an edging. "Sew" around the edges of the fabric
on your sewing machine with no thread in the needle. This is supposed to
leave a nice trail of holes. I guess you would have to experiment to get
the right size needle to get holes that won't either close right up or be
too big.
AKTATTER: with those hole you can tat right into the fabric of the pillowcase AKTATTER: but Katie Verna/occhitat: , AKTATTER: that means when the pillow case wears out there is a problem reusing the tatting Wally: Hmm... That's a good idea. I think I'll experiment with mom's machine. :-D AKTATTER: if you sew the tatting down separately then you can removea and reuse the tatting AKTATTER: soem tatters crocheted a row of single crochets in the hemstitched hankie edge and caught the picot in the single with the crochet hook in the appropriate space. So it was accomplished simultaneously, finishing the hankie edge and attaching the tatting. AKTATTER: purists say not to mix mediums, crochet with tatting, but I say pooh it works Wally: I have done that and the results are very nice paulaw: I think that is what I might try. I don't really crochet yet but I can give it a go. AKTATTER: if the pillow case edge is a raw edge then make a 'roll' which creates a "tunnel" in the cloth.
In this case, you use invisible thread or a thread matching the color of the
cloth and run the needle through the tunnel and out catching up the picots
here and there to secure the lace to the cloth Susan: or maybe sewing a long stitch, and picking that up to join the tatting to the pillow case? AKTATTER: Ask Jeeves Answer
AKTATTER: that is an old link may it works still AKTATTER: nope no good AKTATTER: any other needle tatting questions? AKTATTER: Katie how is the baby quilt comeing along? Katie Verna/occhitat: Arg, have to remove some stitch in the ditch quilting. Fabrics shifted on me. AKTATTER: bummer Katie Verna/occhitat: You bet! AKTATTER: I got my first lesson in crazy quilt embellishing last night Katie Verna/occhitat: Cool! From whom? AKTATTER: who knew there was a ratio of solids to prints? not I AKTATTER: Shari called me Cynthia from x.x.x.14 joined the chat 65 minutes ago AKTATTER: welcome cyn Cynthia: Hi everyone Rosemarie: k Katie Verna/occhitat: Solids to prints ratio. AKTATTER: an article in PIECEWORK recommends Paula AKTATTER: Block gently by spray starching and lightly pressing with a steam iron making sure all of the points are sharp. Seam the two ends of the edging together on the wrong side. Pin the border to the edge or the hemline of the pillowcase stretching slightly; whipstitch the border to the edge or the hemline with the sewing thread. Susan: thanks AKTATTER: welcome again mary AKTATTER: glad to see you sheron paulaw: ok. Thanks for all your help. This gives me somethings to try and decide what I like best. Cynthia: wow you've been busy! Glad I got here to read the list. Anne and I were working on the butterfly pattern for the Beginners Challenge for the Houstn Holocaust museum butterfly project Katie Verna/occhitat: , AKTATTER: you know paula this reminds me of a problem I encountered once AKTATTER: I finished teh tatted edge and joined start to end and it turned out AKTATTER: when I sewed it down that it "shrank" and would not fit AKTATTER: now I tat the pice almost to the end and then sew it down krystledawne from x.x.x.188 joined the chat 59 minutes ago AKTATTER: after that I tat the remainder and join first tolast perfect fit Katie Verna/occhitat: Hi, Hopie! AKTATTER: YES PUALE STRING THE BUGLE BEADS FIRST Cynthia: a chopped up old credit card makes a good gauge too Sandy: Thanks! I have it down but don't always get the ds snugged up in the exact spot. Just need practice. AKTATTER: SURE WALLY WHY NOT IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT LENGTH BUGLE BEAD? Cynthia: anything in tatting is improved by practice....I know mine is AKTATTER: AS YOU SET THE FIRST HALF STITCH SANDY Wally: Could use a picot gauge a couple of mm smaller if you see that the bare thread tends to stretch AKTATTER: KEEP THE CARDBOARD IN THE PINCH WITH THE THREAD HELD DOWN BY THE THUMB NAIL OF THE LEFT HAND Cynthia: good idea Wally Sandy: Oh! Wally, that might work! AKTATTER: ROTATE THE LEFT HAND SLIGHTYL AWAY FROM YOU AKTATTER: AS YOU SET THE SECOND HALF STITCH AKTATTER: AND BARE THREAD SPACES DO STRETCH!!! hope G: I made the short picot "less" with the theory that it would stretch- and it blocked nicely Paule: In my h o allthread stretch a litttle...
