AKTATTER: ok Dec. 14, 2009 afternoon needle tatting class Barb: that what I was thinking.. blizzard. LOL Margaret: Merry Christmas, Georgia, enjoy the season AKTATTER: well, it's all these snowflakes were tatting' up today krystledawne: Lol yeah susan cuss: Merry Christmas all picotsnkeys: pretty pattern! AKTATTER: Merry Christmas all Happy Holidays susan cuss: we already have over 1 1/2 feet of snow.... picotsnkeys: wish I could take time to tat it now, I will get to it in January Margaret: now I will go finish my crocheting and get tatting on that big angel which I hope to have done by Fri night when I go to bed Barb: Same to you too Georgia :) Winkerbill: i'm back! AnneB: Back with my up of tea :-) AKTATTER: TO START THE SESSION ARE THERE ANY NEEDLE TATTING QUESTIONS? AnneB: Hi all! AKTATTER: HEY STEPH! Winkerbill: hi Georgia! susan cuss: no questions here Margaret: have a good Christmas, Georgia, off to make Christmas presents Winkerbill: i guess it's my fault....I've gotten stuck in "snowflake" mode and can'at seem to quit tatting snowflakes.... picotsnkeys: I just need more hours in the day to try my new needle tatting skills!! krystledawne: I'm happily awaiting the arrival of Marilee Barb: I have one Georgia. picotsnkeys: Hi Anne and Steph Winkerbill: no snow where I am, just chilly. (unless you're in Norway, then it's probably "warm" here compared to the temperatures where Anne is) Rosemarie: k Winkerbill: hi Melanie Barb: When you work off the ball and do the first ring you have to do scmr. ...hang on.. krystledawne: We had a little sprinklw of snow....just enough to freeze the roads and delay school krystledawne: We are snow wimps, AKTATTER: BYE MARGARET OK BARB picotsnkeys: so are we...the mountain kids get more than we do....but school still starts on time . yawn.. Margaret: Georgia, enjoy your Christmas, I go to Mom's on Saturday until the 26th (no computer access) AnneB: Oh - it is just 21 here - cold but I used to be used to colder cold LOL picotsnkeys: safe journey Margaret! Enjoy the Season with your Mom! Barb: Ok. let me start over. When working off the ball you have to do a scmr to close the ring. But in the book "Learn to Needle Tat' it doesn't call it that. It just calls it a ring. Margaret: Barb, what page are you on? picotsnkeys: k Winkerbill: low 40's here....and damp. Seems to make it feel much worse. Margaret: she starts with true ring and then in Ring and Chain method teaches SCMR Winkerbill: and I'm used to much warmer....used to live further south. Winkerbill: ;--) Barb: I am doing a series of split rings on top of split rings but the first ring is an scmr. AKTATTER from x.x.x.243 joined the chat 7 hours ago Barb: Is it still called an scmr even though it's in needle tatting? picotsnkeys: brb tea Winkerbill: brb - my tea should be ready, too. krystledawne: It's technicaly a SCMR but I don't see that many people calling it that AKTATTER: the terms vary from book to book and teacher to teacher Margaret: Barb, in needle tatting, the 'normal' ring is a scmr but we don't mention that, we just say ring krystledawne: I've only seen SCMR term used in two shuttle tatting AKTATTER: all the needle tatted rings which have the needle posted thru the loop held out are scmr whether it says so on not Barb: Margaret I'm reading page 15 where she teaches you how to work off the ball. I can do it ok. :) But I want to know how to write it in a pattern? Do you call it an scmr? Rosemarie: k AKTATTER: for good info on needle tatting basics go to http://www.frontiernet.net/~tammyrodgers/index.shtml krystledawne: Most needle tatters will know what to do Margaret: Barb, email me later and maybe we can come here when it is available and chat about that book AKTATTER: if you are writing specifically for needle tatters it would not be necessary krystledawne: just tell them to work form the ball and they will do it correctly Margaret: no, Barb, needle tatters just make a scmr naturally AKTATTER: if you are writing a generic tatting pattern just say ring and let the tatter determine how the ring will be made Barb: Ah.. ok ladies.. Thank you so much for the help. :) Margaret: now. /bye picotsnkeys: good question Barb....keep them coming! Winkerbill: actually ....even if you are writing rings and chains, you can do true rings on the needle, then work off teh ball with the chains, can't you? AKTATTER: study this page also to get a firm idea of the "names" of needle tatted rigns http://www.frontiernet.net/~tammyrodgers/rhtech.html#rmr Margaret: bye/ Margaret from x.x.x.122 left the chat 7 hours ago AKTATTER: yep Steph see this page http://www.frontiernet.net/~tammyrodgers/rhtech.html#rmr maria alcant from x.x.x.154 joined the chat 7 hours ago Barb: Thank you Georgia Barb: I had printed that one off during one of the lessons AnneB: Hi Maria! maria alcant: marry cristmas and happy new year 2010 to all! AKTATTER: ok needle tatters have you read the info onthehalf closed rings by Mark Myers? picotsnkeys: Hi maria AKTATTER: suer thing Barb Welcome Maria your brilliant red snowflake is a knockout!!!! Barb: And I was looking at it this morning and noticed that they called it an scmr. So that is why I was wondering if I should put that into the instructions. I am trying to learn how to write tatting directions. :) Raelara from x.x.x.210 joined the chat 7 hours ago AKTATTER: welcome Jenni maria alcant: thank you!!!!!! g coming from you wow! AnneB: Hi Jenni! picotsnkeys: Hi Jennie Winkerbill: and feliz navidad....y ....(good) nuevo ano to you, Maria. (Sorry, I really don't speak Spanish...as you can tell.) AKTATTER: any questions on doing the half closed rings ont he needle? Raelara: hi all AKTATTER: everyone go see the homework for today http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2009/2009index.html picotsnkeys: How hard is it to get the "tension" correct? Cynthia from x.x.x.14 joined the chat 7 hours ago Cynthia: Hi picotsnkeys: Hi Cynthia! Big hug to you! AnneB: Yea - that is quite a snowflake, Maria :-) AKTATTER: tension on the needle will be an absolute nightmare susan cuss: it's beautiful AnneB: Hi Cynthia - h hug from me too! picotsnkeys: oh good. That's what I first thought! AKTATTER: it is so very important to use the correct needle size with the right thread maria alcant: but you writed correctly!!!! so you are learning quite soon... AKTATTER: the rule of thumb is to choose a needle whose diameter is the same diameter as the thread when laid side by side Cynthia: Thank you for the hugs...it has been a tough week but the new normal is taking over... Rosemarie: k picotsnkeys: I also thought that using a tightly spun thread so it slides easily is necessary Barb: Barb waving at Cynthia susan cuss: I didn't know that Barb: I didn't know that about the thread either. I wondered how you tell which needle to use. picotsnkeys: Or is using a thread that grabs other thread better so that the stitches stay on the bare thread easier? maria alcant: thank you anne...is the one g gave us las t monday.... AKTATTER: with the tatting needle you have a vast array of threads and fibers you can use which would bnt pull through easily on a shuttle Winkerbill: hi Cynthia! Extra big hug from me, too, since you've had a rough week. maria alcant: g do you have some rules of needle3 vs thred #? AnneB: You have been busy tatting then! AKTATTER: the reason that needle tatted items can so often be seen to be needle tatting lies in the wrong size needle with the thread maria alcant: yes!!!!! i am finishing today´s class work MJB from x.x.x.185 joined the chat 7 hours ago AKTATTER: when thread and needle arematch well, it is extrememly difficult to tell shuttle and needle tatting apart Winkerbill: I discovered that you can use smooth, cheap thread on teh inside and rough stuff on the outside (SCMRs) with the shutlte, too, and that way you can make sparkly stuff with thread that normally doesn't cooperate ;-) krystledawne: I have a hard time pulling the needle through sometime though when needletatting AnneB: Hi Mary Jane! susan cuss: do you have any pics to show this difference? MJB: Hello everybody krystledawne: using the size needle I think would be correct Winkerbill: I have had to cut the thread off the needle before....thought I was tatting way too tight ....maybe the needle was too small? AKTATTER: also, needle tatters should not hesitate to use double carrying cords as in the JNT method or in regular tatting as it gives the end product better body AKTATTER: krystle that comes from the death grip you have o nthe thread lol krystledawne: Yeah I think so maria alcant: jnt? krystledawne: so, use smaller needle, tat looser? AKTATTER: and the possibility that your tatting needle's eye is larger than the diameter of the body of the neede Barb: How do you carry double threads Georia? Do you put two threads into the eye of the needle or? picotsnkeys: I have on a post-it note: size 3 needle for pearl 3; size 5 needle for pearl5 and size 10 & 20; size 7 for perle 8, size 20, 30, 40, 50 Winkerbill: I tried a double carrying cord with the needle - that was one of the times I had to actually CUT the thread off of it....got stuck partway through and wouldn't go any further, wouldn't go back on, either. Cynthia: we all do that...my finer needles all have bends in them AKTATTER: JNT = Jiffy Needle Tatting method krystledawne: I have the needles from HH Winkerbill: I think the needles eye was a bit larger than the needle itself....didn't think tatting needles were made that way, but this one apparently was. maria alcant: thanks for the tip! picot... AKTATTER: Susan? to show needle tatting as opposed to shuttle tatting? susan cuss: yes maria alcant: thnks G AKTATTER: Barb, you can double the cord by just pulling one end thru the needle and having both in the core Barb: Ahh.. like you would sewing thread.. AKTATTER: if the eye of the needle is large enough to allow two threads, thatis possible also, but most tatting needles today are too small for that. AKTATTER: right Barb AKTATTER: that is a good chart keys picotsnkeys: confession time: I never have the patience to fuss with fancy thread for as long as it takes to finish a snowflake! AKTATTER: Maris we studied JNT method recenly Barb: I was wondering if they make tatting needles with larger eyes or with two eyes? Raelara: not that I know of susan cuss: two eyes sounds neat maria alcant: but you can addapt one of double eye used forlath picotsnkeys: I used a doll making needle that had the point dulled. Gretta from x.x.x.18 joined the chat 7 hours ago picotsnkeys: The eye was longer, but that point was sharp! lol Winkerbill: really? I keep reminding myself it'll be worth it when I get it finished....it will look so nice with that fancy thread....and little by little, it gets finished. THE BEAD WILL DANGLE FROM THE PICOT. meowy: . Dantatter: . AKTATTER: OPPS I GOT AHEAD A BIT picotsnkeys: k maria alcant: ..... yarnplayer: TO ANSWER THE QUESTION ABOUT THREAD, I LIKE 6 CORD COTTON, WHICH IS VERY FIRM AND SMOOTH. Winkerbill: I never thought about tilting my hand....I jus tnoticed sometimes htey cooperate, sometimes they keep sliding in the way. Claudia: thanks ! AKTATTER: OK mARILEE TO RECAP, WE MAKE THE LARGE BEADED RING, CLOSE THAT AND THEN A SPLIT RING Cynthia: the pattern says cotton crochet...I don't know where to get 6 cord cottom crotchet thread? Is it a special order? AKTATTER: AND THEN THE HIDDEN CHAIN AKTATTER: AND THE LARGE BEAD IS ON IT yarnplayer: THE 'HIDDEN CHAIN' IS JUST AN ORDINARY SHORT CHAIN THAT DOESN'T SHOW ON THE PHOTO. Winkerbill: cordonnet thread - like Lizbeth or some of the others you can get from Handy Hands. AKTATTER: AND THAT IS A GOOD TECHNIQUE TO GET THE LENGTH OF THE PICOT JUST RIGHT AKTATTER: NEXT IS ANOTHER SPLIT RING? meowy: . Cynthia: Thanks Wink I didn't think of the Lizbeth as "crochet" thread... picotsnkeys: . yarnplayer: YES, ANOTHER SPLIT RING, TO GO AROUND THE LARGE BEAD. Beadweaver: . AKTATTER: OK GOOD AND THEN A SMALLER SPLIT RING Dantatter: DMC and Anchor are cordonnets and 6 cords AKTATTER: NO BEAD Winkerbill: a lot of those threads are for tatting, crochet, knitting.....except we think of them as "tatting' threads, and most people ....if they think of them at all....think of them as crochet cotton. ;-) AKTATTER: AND THEN YOU SAY TO DO THE VICTORIAN SETS Cynthia: true Wink... AKTATTER: WE JUST STUDIED THEM IN CLASS RECENTNLY Beadweaver: k maria alcant: . clesliea: k Dantatter: Aida and Flora are also 6 cords yarnplayer: THE PICOT WITH THE LARGE BEAD ON IT NEEDS TO BE JOINED TO THE END OF THE SPLIT RING. Raelara: y Claudia: k maria alcant: k MJB: k Beadweaver: k Winkerbill: does it matter which thread goes on top and which goes underneath? AKTATTER: SO WE DO THE SET STITCH CHAIN AROUND AND DOWN TO THE SPOT NEXT TO THE HIDDEN CHAIN AND THEN THE ALLIGATOR JOIN! Needlework.Eng: Idea! Found an old cushion I designed out of stryofoam and am working still on the cushions. Working on the snowmans but haven't finished them. Beadweaver: k AKTATTER: THE PATTERN STARTS AT THE BOTTOM RIGHT MARILEE? Gail: k AKTATTER: LOL WELL THAT'S HOW WE GOT THE BOO BOO CROSS MARILEE IT CAN'T ALWAYS BE DONE AKTATTER: YOU MUST STRING THE BEADS FOR THE FIRST RING IN PROPER ORDER yarnplayer: YES, THE EARRING STARTS AT THE BOTTOM RING, THE ONE WITH ALL THE BEADS. AKTATTER: SO THAT THE DANGLE IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE AKTATTER: THERE IS A GOOD PHOTO OF THE START ON PAGE 2 AKTATTER: WITH SO MANY BEADS IN THE RING ON THE HAND YOU MAY FIND IT AWKWARD AKTATTER: IF THE BEADS SLIP AROUND ON YOU, TILT YOUR HAND SLIGHTLY AWAY FROM YOU AKTATTER: GRAVITY WILL MAKE THE BEADS HANG OUT DOWN NEXT TO YOUR LITTLE FINGER yarnplayer: IF YOU DON'T HAVE A TEARDROP SHAPED BEAD, YOU COULD JUST USE A LARGER BEAD THERE. Liz_: . AKTATTER: OK OR MAYBE EVEN A CHARM IF IT WERE NOT TOO HEAVY Katie Verna/occhitat: , AKTATTER: WHEN THIS RING CLOSES WE GO INTO A SPLIT RING AKTATTER: IS THE SPLIT RING NEW TO ANYONE TNIGHT? AKTATTER: GOOD FOR YOU ANITA IT WILL OPEN UP A WORLD OF SPECTACULAR TATTING FOR YOU ONCE YOU CAN SPLIT RING AND SPLIT CHAIN AKTATTER: WHOSE GOT COOKIES? Beadweaver: k Gail: me, chocolate mint AKTATTER: NOW MARILEE IS HAVING A MAKE A VERY LONG PICOT ON THIS CHAIN Angela: I have some 7 layer bars Cynthia: I told all the beginners to bring 3 cookies to share.... Gail: want some AKTATTER: HMMM GOOD WHICH WILL HAVE ABIG BEAD ON IT AKTATTER: GOOD THINKING CYN Yuma Tatter: have to figure it out with needle yarnplayer: IT'S JUST AN ORDINARY CHAIN, BUT IT'S "HIDDEN" BECAUSE IT DOESN'T SHOW ON THE PHOTO. Yuma Tatter: have coffee AKTATTER: YES I HAD TO LOOK CLOSELY NOT TO SEE IT MARILEE AKTATTER: HMM DID THAT MAKE SENSE? Paule: no G Gail: almost:-) AKTATTER: CHECK HERE ANITA http://www.georgiaseitz.com/nt/needletattingbasicspt2.html Sandy: k AKTATTER: SO WE PULL THE RING HREAD THRU THE BEAD AKTATTER: PUT A PAPERCLIP ON THE END OF THE LOOP AND THEN SNUG UP THE PICOT AND COMPLETE THE CHAIN Bernice: k yarnplayer: ACTUALLY, IT'S THE CHAIN THREAD THAT IS PULLED THROUGH THE BEAD. Katie Verna/occhitat: , AKTATTER: SO THIS BEADED PICOT JUST FLOPS IN THE AIR UNTIL WE CLOSE THE FOLLOWING SPLIT RING susan cuss: k Beadweaver: k AKTATTER: MARILEE MAKES A LOCK JOIN TO THAT PICOT AKTATTER: AND THEN MAKES A SMALL SPLIT RING NO BEAD AKTATTER: THEN SHE GETS TRICKY ON US yarnplayer: RIGHT, GEORGIA, THE PAPER CLIP IS TO JUST HOLD THE BEAD ON TEMPORARILY. Wally: . AKTATTER: AND WE BEGIN A LONG LINE OF CHAIN IN VICTORIAN SETS Cynthia: k Yuma Tatter: thanks Georgia... confession time ... i'm trying to finish a pair of earrings tonight for a gift ... but I checked the link... i believe i can do the split ring now. AKTATTER: EXCELLENT METHOD TO MAKE SURE THE PICOT IS THE RIGHT LENGTH M AKTATTER: WAY TO GO ANITA THAT WAS FAST WORK! AKTATTER: SO THIS RUFFLES CHAIN GOES DOWN BACK TO THE SPOT OF THE HIDDEN CHAIN Sandy: k AKTATTER: AND THEN WHAT HAPPENS? WHO KNOWS? Cynthia: aligator join here? Paule: and then back up Gail: k AKTATTER: YOU LOOKED AHEAD DIDN'T YOU CYN! susan cuss: k AKTATTER: OK YES IT IS MY FAVORITE JOIN THE ALLIGATOR JOIN AKTATTER: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2007/alligatorjoin.html Paule: of course! you better too Cynthia: well it goes across so just figured it was a gator join... Liz_: . AKTATTER: AND THISIS THE FIRST TIME THAT I HAVE SEEN THE ABBREVIATION AJ FOR ALLIGATOR JOIN SO SIMPLE, SO APPROPRIATE yarnplayer: YES, CYNTHIA AND PAULE, YOU'VE GOT IT. Bernice: k AKTATTER: AFTE THE JOIN IS SNUGGED KEEP THE SETS GOING ONT HE CHAIN BACK TO THE TOP Cynthia: it sure is...I thought you designated it that way,,,Georgia AKTATTER: JOIN INTO THE TOP OF THE SMALL SPLIT RING Wally: . AKTATTER: ANY SPECIAL TIPS ABOUT JOINING TO THE JEWLRY FINDING MARILEE? AKTATTER: AS YOU DO THE LAST SPLIT RING YOU WILL NOTE THAT THERE ARE THREE BEADED PICOTS ON THE WRAPPED SIDE yarnplayer: WELL, THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO JOIN TO THE FINDING. THE EASIEST MAY BE TO JUST USE A NORMAL JOIN. Beadweaver: k AKTATTER: SO WOE IS YOU IF YOU FORGOT TO PUT THREE BEADS ON SHUTTLE 2 AKTATTER: I WONDERED IF WE NEEDED MORE THANONE THREAD OVER THE METAL PART? Paule: ... and hiding ends?... AKTATTER: IF YOU DID FORGET, WIND OFF A BIT FROM SH2 PUT ON THE BEADS AND FINGER TAT THE LAST LITTEL BIT OF A RING yarnplayer: NO PROBLEM, YOU ARE ALMOST DONE AT THAT POINT, SO JUST UNWIND THE SHUTTLE TO ADD THEM, IF YOU FORGOT EARLIER. AKTATTER: DO YOU HAVE A RECOMMENDATION ON WHERE TO HIDE THE ENDS MARILEE? Yuma Tatter: k yarnplayer: I LIKE TO HIDE THEM IN THE LAST RING.
