AnneB: Hi Steph Winkerbill: We played hooky from school last Monday. AnneB: On ice? Winkerbill: Mary and I went ...um...about 2 hours east of here Winkerbill: and got together with 3 of her cousins to tat all afternoon and evening last Monday. Winkerbill: it was great fun! AnneB: Fun is great! Winkerbill: no ice, eitehr Anne. It's ....well...it's hot enough we have to run the air conditioner. Barb from x.x.x.12 joined the chat 7 hours ago AnneB: It is warm here too - kind of... Winkerbill: hi Barb! Barb: Hi :) AKTATTER: welcome Barb Winkerbill: Supposed to be "normal" here starting tomorrow - in the 50s instead of close to 80 AnneB: Hi Barb! Barb: Hi Gerogia and Anne AKTATTER: that sound a like a great treat Steph Winkerbill: oh, it was! Sort of like a mini Tat Days. Barb: brb AnneB: Normal here is in the 20-30-ies in Nowember, today was 42 AKTATTER: the farmers have been picking like crazy the last few days with such warm weather but the rain came in last night and now we aer back to waiting again AKTATTER: is that F or C? Winkerbill: I taught Cathy to do a split chain with the shuttle.....we started by covering a ring, then continued around and around, climbing out mid-chain for a coupel rounds. Winkerbill: I think Anne's telling us F temperatures. AKTATTER: good exercise for split chain AnneB: Right! Winkerbill: I looked her weather up last week just to see how cold it was in Norway....and it was in the 30s then. Winkerbill: Normal here in November is 50s and 60s during the day. AnneB: 6C today - on the warm side :-) Winkerbill: oh, 6 sounds so much colder than 42! AnneB: 6C is cold during summer, but warm now. Winkerbill: Oh, I discovered when I ran out of little plastic rings that you can make a ...um..."firm" ring for the middle of the little medallion using Ruth's BDS, too.... AKTATTER: welcome to the Nov. 16, 2009 afternoon needle tatting session Winkerbill: brb - got to get my tea. Barb: bk AKTATTER: are there any questions on needle tatting today? AKTATTER: just finished a cuppa peach tea with a pumpkin spice doughnut, hhm love fall AnneB: not from me Barb: k AKTATTER: ok if you would like to join me I am searching online for patterns that use the s or z chain, victorian sets, node stitch and/or rick rack tatting AKTATTER: want to make a little list of examples. AnneB: Ok - I'll find google... Winkerbill: I love fall, but I have to have my tea "year round." Winkerbill: Didn't Mark Myers have a "how to" on the s or the z chain? Maybe I'm thinking of someone/something else, though.... AnneB: I like fall too - the stars returns after the midnight sun season AKTATTER: yes I believe he did but I haven't found it on his new site yet Winkerbill: one question on rick rack tatting.... Barb: should we sign in or?? Winkerbill: it's the same as node stitch, right? Winkerbill: is there a key to "how to" get the rick rack look to be on the front side? Winkerbill: seems no matter which way I do it, the little zigzags end up on the back. Winkerbill: ....or maybe it was the front and I can't seem to get them to show up on the back instead....? My brain seems to have shut itself off for the last couple days. Gretta from x.x.x.201 joined the chat 7 hours ago Winkerbill: hi Gretta AKTATTER: yes the same thing, only the choice of which hs to use and how many to use, and when to switch changes, AnneB: Hi Gretta! Gretta: hey Winkerbill: so how do you hold it to make the zigzag show up ...um...where you intend for it to show up? Gretta: don't usually get here in time for this class. glad to be here AKTATTER: Gretta welcome AKTATTER: shuttle or needle? AKTATTER: Gretts do you have a needle tatting question? Gretta: not today, just checking in Barb: Here's Tatman's for zigzag http://tatmantats.wordpress.com/zig-zag-tatted-chain/ AKTATTER: ok then we are looking for examples of the node stitch or Victorian sets used online if you want to join the search Barb: but it's for shuttle, not needle. Gretta: you would just use 2 needles AKTATTER: wonderfl thanks for finding it Winkerbill: oh, super, that's such a great explanation. I think the pictures are what help me the most. Barb: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/classes2/riegomaltese.jpg This one is for Pearl stitch, but shuttle not needle Winkerbill: Thanks. AKTATTER: zig zag or node stitch uses only one needle I believe Angela from x.x.x.19 joined the chat 6 hours ago Barb: I loved that you put the needle tatting pictures of the different chains up for today's lesson. Angela: Hi Winkerbill: and you wrap "x" number of times one way, then the same number of times the other way using one needle....for node stitch, that is. AnneB: Hi Angela! Angela: Hi, Anne Winkerbill: hi ANgela Cynthia from x.x.x.14 joined the chat 6 hours ago AKTATTER: great I thought they would show the different effects Angela: Hi wink AnneB: Hi Cynthia! AKTATTER: right Steph welcome Angela do you have a needle tatting question today? Angela: no, not me. Angela: my needle is at home in Michigan Cynthia: finally.... Barb: I tried the pearl stitch that you had on your page and got it worked out I think from just looking at the picture you gave. Cynthia: I'm on Jan's computer and it doesn't like me...lol Winkerbill: I used to be ...um...infatuated with node stitch. Substituted it every time a pattern used a Josephine chain....and sometimes substituted it for 'regular" chains, too. AnneB: Google found this: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/setstitch.html LOL AnneB: You'd need to tat someting for it and I'm sure it will behave better :-) Winkerbill: Taht little heart on the beginner lessons....I think it was on the page where you learn lock joins....I made node stitch handles on all my hearts. AKTATTER: lol while I am glad it did!! Winkerbill: had them hanging on every knob in the house for a LONG while. Winkerbill: ;-) Cynthia: Good thought...maybe a snowflake for it,,,, Winkerbill: hehehehI had one taped to my computer for years. Finally fell off after we moved. Winkerbill: that computer behaved itself very well, though. Cynthia: Hi everyone what a nice idea Steph maybe I'll do that to this one... AKTATTER: well a Josephine chain is a s or z chain basically Barb: k AKTATTER: welcome Cynthia we are searching online for examples of fancy chains Barb: HI Cynthia :) Cynthia: ah ha the reason it specifies j1 or j2 in some patterns... Cynthia: I can get to this spot but will lose it if I try to look elsewhere... :( AKTATTER: right Cyn Cynthia: I've seen the designations but wasn't sure what it meant for sure...but now I do. AKTATTER: well here is my needle tatting question for the day Winkerbill: I've been looking all over the table and surrounding area for my thread cutter......just found it....hanging around my neck on a lanyard. Cynthia: I'll cry if my computer isn't back by Thursday...I can teach just no all the other info I usually have... AnneB: Can't you open another browser window Cynthia? Barb: What do you mean Cynthia? I'm a little lost about what you are saying? AKTATTER: if you are wrapping 3 colors per side doing maltese or pearl tatting with the needle, how many thread do you need to pull through the eye of the needle? Cynthia: not on this computer Anne Jan has it set for her likes... Barb: I mean about the j1 or j2?? Cynthia: it took me 10 mins to find my way in here...I'm afraid to try... Cynthia: would it be 3? AnneB: One? Cynthia: Barb for the josephine chain or ring when it specifies J1 (first half of the stitch ) or j2 (second half) Barb: Ahhh.. ty AKTATTER: brb Cynthia: Jan only opens one page at a time and to do more is beyond me. We hope it will be a quick fix for my computer AnneB: You'd need to tat a snowflake for your computer too :-) Winkerbill: or tat a little heart for you computer.....let him know you love him Raelara from x.x.x.7 joined the chat 6 hours ago meowy from x.x.x.18 joined the chat 6 hours ago Winkerbill: mine seemed to like the little strip of flowered edging I made and taped to it (that was before the heart) Cynthia: Mine likes me and hs a navigator sitting on the monitor.... meowy: hi guys :) Cynthia: I'll figure out something ... Winkerbill: hi meow Cynthia: Hi meowy and Rae AnneB: Hi Jenni and Stacey! Barb: Hi meowy Angela: Hi Meow MJB from x.x.x.84 joined the chat 6 hours ago Raelara: hi Winkerbill: had a computer at work I used to threaten with an axe....told it I kept an axe under the desk and if it didn't behave itself RIGHT THIS MINUTE I was going to chop it up in little pieces. AnneB: Hi Mary Jane MJB: Hello AnneB Winkerbill: crazy thing, though....it used to statrt working right after I threatened it. Cynthia: LOL I thougt of that...but Doug won't let me bring in the axe Cynthia: I'll manage until I get mine back Winkerbill: i didnt' really have an axe down there, I was just "convincing" when I told it I did. Barb: K Jenny from x.x.x.14 joined the chat 6 hours ago Winkerbill: oh - I think Im in love....tried a new thread this weekend Jenny: Hi everybody Cynthia: I'm ready to get the real one...but the tech thinks it is a fairly easy fix...just a switch or relay MJB: Hello Jenny AKTATTER: back again, welcome everyone Raelara: what kind of thread was that winker? Cynthia: what thread Steph? and Hi Jenny and MJ MJB: Hello Cynthia Winkerbill: Sulky metallic....comes on a small spool, 250 yards, very smooth and shiny.I got the silver, and it looks fantastic wound onto a shuttle with another thread - any thickness, any color Cynthia: ooohhh that sounds fun Winkerbill: and it tats NICE - smooth, not scrapey (is that a word?) like some of the other metallics. AnneB: Hi Jenny Barb: k AKTATTER: okthe answer tothe needle tatting question of the day is ONE!!! no matter how many threads you use on the outside, you need but one thread for the core/foundation thread Winkerbill: Been making sparkly snowflakes all weekend. :-) granny from x.x.x.201 left this message 6 hours ago: HI, I'm here, so new to all this but expecting fun and learning! Raelara: is it a fine thread? MJB: Hello Granny Raelara: like one you add to others? meowy: . Winkerbill: very fine. Raelara: or can you use it alone? granny from x.x.x.201 joined the chat 6 hours ago Winkerbill: tried tatting a ring with it alone - can't feel it in my hands, can't see it, it's like us9ing shiny spiderweb AnneB: Hi Granny! Jenny: Hello Granny you will have fun Raelara: so you would need to do a few strands in order to use just the metallic thread Winkerbill: so I use it with another thread. Looks nicer that way, too - alone is too shiny. Cynthia: ooohhhh that wounds fun and Hi Granny welcome to the fun AKTATTER: welcome Granny glad you found us AnneB: Sounds like a challenge Steph! Barb from x.x.x.12 joined the chat 6 hours ago AnneB: Any photos yet? Winkerbill: I'd use 2 or 3 strands to use just the metlalic thread, yes. AKTATTER: open chat continues 8 more minutes granny: where do I find this snowflake pattern? Winkerbill: no camera....can't even scan for the last ....6 or 8 months, probably. ;-( Gretta: Hi Granny, I've just been here a short time and it's lots of fun MJB: m Raelara: welcome Granny! Barb: k Raelara: I have another question on my manger scene? granny: thank you everyone! I do feel very welcome Winkerbill: Granny I've been doing snowflakes from the book "Mini-tats" by Patti Duff. it's out of print, but there are snowflakes everywhere. Raelara: the manger itself is kicking my butt MJB: You will enjoy the class granny: are there pictures? or is this all chat? Raelara: I figured out a good triangle piece for the short end, but the long side, patricularly the rhombus shape, is puzzling me Barb from x.x.x.12 joined the chat 6 hours ago AKTATTER: look here Granny http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2009/setstitch.html DorcasAnn from x.x.x.12 joined the chat 6 hours ago DorcasAnn: Hi, Mary Jane MJB: Hey Dorcas Ann Winkerbill: oh, so this isn't a manger scene pattern, you're writing it as you go? AKTATTER: if you go to the index http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2009/2009index.html, the lesson are listed by date, you print them off and have them for class. Barb: Georgia. I have a question about the double thread pearl techniques. AKTATTER: hi ya Dorcas and MJB DorcasAnn: Hi, AK MJB: Hi Georgia AKTATTER: og ahead Barb Raelara: yes, I am trying to do it all as an original pattern AnneB: Think I found a pattern using sets: http://www.e.n.e.btinternet.co.uk/Bugs3.pdf (pattern I) one of Jane Eborall's Barb: I played with the 3 and 3 one this morning and got it pretty good I think. but I wasn't sure if I should put two threads in the needle or just one. I did just one and it worked ok to make a ring. but I wasn't sure???? AnneB: Hi Dorcas DorcasAnn: Hello, Anne Barb: For practice I did it with 2 colors. And did the white set of ds in regular ds , then I did the green thread in reverse.. that is, I started with 2nd ds first. Barb: That way it kept the bars on the same side. Winkerbill: Wow, I'm impressed! A whole manger scene and all original patterns! That's awesome! AKTATTER: just one thread through the eye of the needle in regular needle tatting AKTATTER: only in the Jiffy Needle Tatting method do you use a doubled and knotted foundation cord/ core thread Barb: I mean I started with the 2nd half of the ds first on the green thread. AKTATTER: good planning Barb Raelara: hopefully I get it figured out MJB: m AKTATTER: right you use reverse half stitch order to make both sides the same Barb: Jiffy Needle tatting? MJB: never heard of that Raelara: I am starting the test-tats of my sketched concepts, and what I had for the manger is just not working AKTATTER: that was a good one Anne Barb: by using the reverse half stitch the picots stayed on the side that they were supposed to be on. Otherwise it kind of tried to slip a little. AKTATTER: JIffy Needle TAtting method developed by Ed Morin for use by his wife Selma who was legally blind AKTATTER: there are abogut a dozen of their pattern books still available used mostly, many patternws repeated between the books though Raelara: wow, tatting blind Raelara: that would be a feat AKTATTER: ok now lets get started! AKTATTER: these chains SHOW MULTIPLE TECHNIQUES AKTATTER: THEY ARE DISPALY ON A CHOPSTICK BUT YOU CAN SUBSITUTE THE CHOP STICK FOR A TATTING NEEDLE OR THE SHUTTLE CORE THREAD AKTATTER: AND ALLELSE IS THE SAME MJB: k picotsnkeys: I think I've learned enough to try some now granny: k AKTATTER: THE FIRST TYPEAT THE TYPE IS THE COMMON WE ALL USE AKTATTER: GOOD TO HEAR Claudia: k AKTATTER: JUST THE REGULAR CHAIN, 1 DS 1 PICOT 1 DS, WE JUST VARY THE NUMBER OF DS AND THE NUMBER AND PLACEMENT OF PICOTS AKTATTER: THE NEXT TWO CHAINS ARE A SET OF OPPOSITES AKTATTER: THE "S" CHAIN VS THE "Z" CHAIN AKTATTER: NOW WHAT DOES S AND Z MEAN DOES ANY ONE KNOW? Barb: k AKTATTER: IF YOU LOOK AT A STRAND meowy: direction of the twist, in spinning wool at least Cynthia: right mewoy AKTATTER: YOU CAN FOLLOW THE FIBERS WHICH SHOW HOW THEY WERE TWISTED IN TO PLACE picotsnkeys: the direction the stitches twist look like the letter AKTATTER: THEY EITHER TWIST FROM TOP LEFT TO BOTTOM RIGHT Claudia: k AKTATTER: = S CHAIN granny: oh, just like spinning wool! AKTATTER: OR THEY TWIZT FROM TOP RIGHT TO BOTTOM LEFT = Z CHAIN AKTATTER: EXACTLY GRANNY picotsnkeys: ....do the twist!..... Jenny: k AKTATTER: AND A LITTLE MASKED POTATOE TOO! Barb: LOL AKTATTER: OK OK MASHED AKTATTER: FOR MORE INFO ON THREADS PLEASE CHECK HERE http://www.superiorthreads.com/education/general-thread-information/thread-twists-s-and-z-understanding-thread-twist-definitions Raelara: lol meowy: ohh hehe was wondering what a masked potato meant Claudia: me too! AKTATTER: TO CREAT THE S CHAIN WE USE THE FIRST HALF STITCH ONLY AND REPEAT IT FOR THE LENGTH OF THE CHAIN AKTATTER: YOU CAN SEE HOW THE TWIST WRAPS AROUND THE NEEDLE/SHUTTL CORE THREAD granny: k picotsnkeys: kinda pretty! AKTATTER: TO CREATE THE Z CHAIN WE USE THE SECOND HALF STITCH ONLY AND REPEAT IT FOR THE LENGTH OF THE CHAIN ALSO AKTATTER: YES IT MAKES LOVELY EFFECT AKTATTER: THE NEXT STEP IS TO COMBINE BOTH THE FIRST AND SECOND HALF STITCHED IN CERTAIN ORDERS Raelara: . Claudia: k AKTATTER: THE FOURTH EXAMPLE IN THE PHOTO SHOWS THE CLASSIC EFFECT OF "SETS" Jenny: . Barb: K picotsnkeys: k AKTATTER: TO MAKE A SET, YOU MAKE THE FIRST HALF STITCH SO MANY TIMES, THEN DO THE SECOND HALF STITCH SO MANY TIMES AND REPEAT meowy: . granny: k AKTATTER: SETS ARE OFTEN WRITTEN LIKE THIS, 4 : 4 OR (4, 4) OR SET A, 4, 4 AnneB: k Claudia: node stitch, rickrack ,, are the same?? Raelara: yes AKTATTER: AND THIS EFFECT IS THE ONE THAT WE HAVE SO MANY DIFFERENT NAMES FOR Cynthia: k AKTATTER: LOOK HERE A chain by any other name is still a chain AKTATTER: OH DUH AKTATTER: http://www.sandbenders.demon.co.uk/tatting/tatting_terms.htm Barb: K picotsnkeys: are there other names for a tatted line that actually changes directions in a rick rack way? AKTATTER: sTEPHANIE PETES ADDED CORD, RIPPLE AND RUFFLE TO THE LIST meowy: ohh ty for that list! AKTATTER: LOOK AT NUMBER 4 EXAMPLE RAE AKTATTER: HERE YOU SEE THE RICK RACK EFFECT AKTATTER: IS THAT WHAT YOU MEANT? Raelara: yes MJB: Oh., remember the rick rack stitch we did in Calif., and the lady hit her finger? picotsnkeys: well, kinda....will the core thread still lay straight? Or will it look more like rick rack ribbon? DorcasAnn: she stuck a needle in it DorcasAnn: or shuttle hook MJB: right AKTATTER: THIS LIST ALSO USES VICOTRIAN SETS NAME BUT I DO NOT RECOMMEND AL THE TERMS ON THIS LIST Barb: ouch AKTATTER: LET'S LOOK AT THIS PATTERN Claudia: what number 4 georgia? AKTATTER: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2008/wallysosasamplerickracksubstitute.jpg granny: got bounced, you warned me. AKTATTER: IS THAT THE EFFECT YOU WANT PICOT? Cynthia: I'll survive without it but boy oh boy is it a pain to use my daughter's I only get 1 screen at a time Winkerbill: I get more than 1 screen at a time, but sometimes it gets confusing on this one.... Winkerbill: At least you have a "backup" you can use. Winkerbill: ;-) Cynthia: Hers is newer than mine and I can;t figure it out...she has much of it password protected... Winkerbill: Does she use hers for business? Cynthia: no she has trust issues right now...left overs from her brain injury Winkerbill: aha....I can understand that. Cynthia: think of forever being like a 15 yr old as far as trusting everyone.... Cynthia: massive brain trauma.... AKTATTER: paula are you here for the needle tatting session, do you have a question? Winkerbill: Will the brain injury heal eventually? Cynthia: it has done an incredible amount just not in the trust area...yet Cynthia: she will hide things from us and then go on adult sites....her dad recognized her way of phrasing.... Paulaw: Not really any questions, just joining for any bits of knowledge I can catch. Cynthia: he was looking for a "naked tree data" site that has to do with a growth study....we recognized Jan's phrasing.. Winkerbill: give it time....the trust area must be a harder one to rebuild. I have a friend who had a brain aneurysm .....she was not expected to live...it took her years to recover, and there are still a few issues she's working on. She had to essentially relearn everything she ever learned....simple things like 1st grade math and stuff, everything. AKTATTER: are you also in the beginners class paula? Cynthia: I understand Steph we've been there...Jan will graduate with a degree in Sociology in May!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yahooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Winkerbill: my friend went back to school in her mid-to-late 30s.....it will take her longer, but she intends to GRADUATE from college eventually. AKTATTER: are you doing both shuttle and needle? Paulaw: I did start with lesson 3 in the October class and missed the last class. I'm thinking of doing it again. Winkerbill: I had to relearn how to walk when I was ....I think I was 11....but other than that I've never had to relearn anything. Paulaw: Just needle. Winkerbill: must be frustrating. Cynthia: I think Georgia is trying to get us into tatting without saying it.... Winkerbill: You must be proud of really Jan. Cynthia: yes it is Wink why did you have to relarn? Winkerbill: relly proud, .... Cynthia: We are incredibly proud of her accomplishments Cynthia: brb Winkerbill: knee problem - after having the injury and original cause for the injury corrected, it had to be taught how to work.... Winkerbill: ;-) AKTATTER: okPaula have you learned to do both ring and chain, picot and join so far? Winkerbill: or I guess *I* had to be taught how to USE it. Winkerbill: ok....I'll be quiet and hang out in my corner and tat.... ;-) AKTATTER: lol ok you two, settle down Paulaw: yes, I've been working on a edging for a baby blanket. Paulaw: Simple edging. AKTATTER: IF YOU CLICK ON IT THEPHOTO WILL ENLARGE AKTATTER: THE SSAMPLES ARE SHOWN ON CHOPSTICKS AKTATTER: SUBSTITUTE THE CHOSPTICK WITH A TATTING NEEDLE OR THE SHUTTLE CORE THREAD AKTATTER: THE FIRS SAMPLE IS A NORMAL TATTED CHAIN AKTATTER: THE PICOTS ARE STILL ON THE NEEDLE IN THE PHOTO Beadweaver: k AKTATTER: JUST 1 DS 1 PICOT REPEATING ONAND ON Barb: k AKTATTER: PLAIN AND SIMPLE AND FOUND IN 90% OF ALL TATTING PATTERNS AKTATTER: BUT THERE IS MORE TO THE SIMPLE CHAIN AKTATTER: THE 2ND AND 3RD SAMPLES ARE A SET AKTATTER: THE FIRST IS A "S" CHAIN \ AKTATTER: AND THE SECOND IS THE "Z" CHAIN Winkerbill: back soon, I hope....DH needs to use the computer for a few minutes....and he's doing something for *me* so I'm not gonna tell him he has to wait. ;-) Winkerbill from x.x.x.194 left the chat 52 minutes ago AKTATTER: THE S AND Z REFER TO THE TWIST IN THE THREAD AKTATTER: OK STEPH AKTATTER: IF YOU LOOK AT A STRAND OF THREAD AKTATTER: IT EITHER TWISTS FROM TOP LEFT TO BOTTOM RIGHT = S CHAIN AKTATTER: OR IT TWISTS FROM TOP RIGHT TO BOTOM LEFT = Z CHAIN Beadweaver: k AKTATTER: FOR MORE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING FIBERS AND THE TWIST PLEASE VISIT: AKTATTER: http://www.superiorthreads.com/education/general-thread-information/thread-twists-s-and-z-understanding-thread-twist-definitions AKTATTER: LLIZ AND PAULA, PLEASE NOTE THAT IT HELPS TO TYPE OK OR K OR ANY LETTER OFTEN AKTATTER: IT KEEPS YOU FROM BEING BOUNCED OUT OF THE ROOM FOR INACTIVITY WHILE YOU ARE READING AKTATTER: OK SOFAR EVERYONE? Sharren: k Barb: k Beadweaver: k AKTATTER: THE S CHAIN IS MADE USING THE FIRST HALF STITCH REPEATED FOR THE LENGTH OF THE CHAIN AKTATTER: THE Z CHAIN IS MADE WITH THE SECOND HALF STITCH REPEATED FOR THE LENGTH OF THE CHAIN Beadweaver: I see! I was wondering AKTATTER: THIS IS ALSO THE EFFECT OF A JOSEPHINE RING, THE TWISTING LOOL AKTATTER: GREAT DEBBIE NOW YOU WILL ALSO LIKE THE 4TH SAMPLE Sandy: ok! Liz: k AKTATTER: THIS USES BOTH THE FIRS AND SECOND HALF STITCH AKTATTER: IN A SPECIFIED PATTERN, FOR EXAMPLE THIS SAMPLE IS CH 4, 4 maria alcant: ... AKTATTER: OR IT CAN BE WRITTEN CH (4,4) OR CH 4:4 Marie Smith: G - are the two twists not reversed. Isn' the 1st half the second one? AKTATTER: SO YOU TAT FIRST HALF STITCH 4 TIMES THEN THE SECOND HALF STITCH 4 TIMES AKTATTER: DO YOU MEAN THE S VS TEH Z CHAIN mARIE? Marie Smith: yes Beadweaver: that's for the 3rd example Marie Smith: the 1st half goes down to the right doesn't it? Marie Smith: Am I messed up? AKTATTER: OK MARIE ROTATE THE PAPER SO THAT THE POSTS AT VERTICAL Winkerbill from x.x.x.194 joined the chat 44 minutes ago Winkerbill: i'm back. ;-) AKTATTER: NOW YOU CAN SEE THE S CHAIN GOES TOP LEFT TO BOTTOM RIGHT Marie Smith: Oh this is needle tatting not shuttle? AKTATTER: AND THE Z CHAIN POST SHOWS THE TWIST FROM TOP RIGHT TO BOTTOM LFET AKTATTER: DOES THAT HELP MARIE? Beadweaver: yes AKTATTER: EITHER NEEDLE OR SHUTTLE THE RESULTING CHAIN IS THE SAME Cynthia: yes Marie but it does the same with a chain AKTATTER: THE HORIZONTAL PHOTO THREW YOU OFF MARIE Cynthia: either needle or shuttle just easier to see on the chopstick AKTATTER: OK NOW SAMPLE 4 USES BOTH FIRST AND SECOND HALF STITCHES AKTATTER: AND THEY ARE APPLIED IN A PATTER, OFTERN CALLED A SET Sharren: k Barb: k Beadweaver: k Sandy: k Liz: k AKTATTER: THIS NAME CHANGES ALSO FROM VICTORIAN SETS, NODE STITHC, RUFFLES, RICK RACK AND ZIG ZAG STITCH maria alcant: k Cynthia: k Marie Smith: I see the chopsticks should be reversed if shuttle tatting on a chain. Is that right? AKTATTER: JUST LOOOK AT THIS LIST BY STEPH PETERS http://www.sandbenders.demon.co.uk/tatting/tatting_terms.htm AKTATTER: NO MARIE WHETHER THERE IS A NEEDLE, CHOP STICK OR JUST THE SHUTTLE CORE THREAD INSIDE IT IS ALL THE SAME ON THE OUTSIDE AKTATTER: THERE ARE MORE TERMS LISTED ALSO AT http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art35288.asp AKTATTER: I DO NOT RECOMMEND MANY OF THE TERMS LISTED ON THAT PAGE Sharren: k AKTATTER: ANY QUESTIONS SO FAR? Paulaw: The Victorian sets -are the nodes on just the front side ? Winkerbill: no questions from my corner ;-) Cynthia: I think we have a tatter having trouble getting into the class.... AKTATTER: WHO IS ITCYN? maria alcant: FTJ >> Free Thread Join this is a normal joint? Sandy: You don't recommend the terms on Bellaonline or the other? AKTATTER: VICTORIAN SETS, NODE STITCH, REFER ALL TO THE SAME THING Cynthia: Spoiled 2 tears is working on getting in but not having much luck...I sent her an invite alredy AKTATTER: NEVER HEARD OF IT BEFORE AMRIA Liz: k Cynthia: she seems to be in the list but not here yet Beadweaver: k Barb: k AKTATTER: BE SURE TO CLICK ON JOIN CHAT WHEN YOU GET TO THE ROOM SPOILED AKTATTER: SO FAR WE HAVE BEEN USING 2 THREADS maria alcant: in Bellaonline you can find it G Cynthia: she has been here before but not for awhile... AKTATTER: THAT'S WHAT I MEAN MARIA, THAT LIST IS A BIT OFF IN MY OPINION AKTATTER: NOW LET'S ADD THE THIRD THREAD AKTATTER: LOOK AT SAMPLE 5 maria alcant: oh!!! ok! Beadweaver: that first list.....you recommend Sherong: Palaw: Yes the waistbands are only on one side, as with the top of the usual chain AKTATTER: THIS IS CALLED PEARL TATTING OR MALTESE TATTING Cynthia: some of the itms in both lists are a bit off...in my humble opinion.... AKTATTER: IT IS NOT A LIST I RECOMMEND TO USE JUST A LIST THAT EXISTS THAT SHOWS US WE HAVE TOO MANY NAMES FOR THE SAME THING Sharren: k AKTATTER: MALTESE NAME COME FROM THE RIEGO BOOKS FROM 1853-1880 http://www.georgiaseitz.com/classes2/riegomaltese.jpg Cynthia: I agree AK we need to get some standardization....but how is the question Beadweaver: This one looks hard AKTATTER: WELL NOT SO HARD REALLY WHEN YOU SEE WHAT THE THREADS ARE DOING Sandy: k AKTATTER: ONE THREAD IS THE CORE THREAD, EITHER ON THE SHUTTLE OR ON THE NEEDLE AKTATTER: THE COLOR OF THE CORE THREAD DOES NOT SHOW Barb: k Sherong: Remember in needle tatting you form the stitches then pull the core thread through, in shuttle you work around the core thread. Two threads either way AKTATTER: THE SECOND THREAD IS ON ONE SIDE, THE THIRD THREAD IS ON THE OTHER SIDE Margaret: I came back after the 2nd phone call to leave the chat room and noticed G you saying that this is pearly tatting. I want to learn this. Are these instructions for needle? AKTATTER: BOTH THESE THREAD COLOR SHOW AND IT GIVES A A PLACE TO GET FANCY maria alcant: .... Margaret: how many needles do I need at once? AKTATTER: 1 NEEDLE Cynthia: just 1 AKTATTER: PLEASE LOOK HERE AT THE LAST PHOTO ONLY AKTATTER: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/classes/maltesesnowflake.html AKTATTER: THIS IS OF COURSE A RING, BUT YOU CAN SEE THE TWO COLORS ON EITHER SIDE OF A CORE THREAD Beadweaver: y Margaret: how do I do that with 1 needle? AKTATTER: IN SHUTTLE TATTING THE PEARL CHAIN YOU TAT WITH ONE SHUTTLE AND WRAP DS IWTH THE SECOND SHUTTLE OVER THE THIRD CORD THREAD Margaret: I should look at the log tomorrow and sew my seat cover now AKTATTER: THREAD THE NEEDLE MARGARET, THE THREAD THRU THE EYE = #1 AKTATTER: PUT THE BALL THREAD ONTHE LEFT AND WRAP ONE DS AKTATTER: LET THE TAIL HANG LOOS BUT PUT ANOTHER BALL THREAD ON THE RIGHT AND USE THE RIGHT HAND TO WRAP ONE DS AKTATTER: CONTINUE TO ALTERNATE HANDS WHILE WRAPPING THE DS ONTO THE NEEDLE AKTATTER: AND WE CAN GO AN EXTRA STEP AKTATTER: ADD PICOTS Liz: k AKTATTER: AND ALTER THE NUMBER OF DS BETWEEN THE PICOTS ON EACH SIDE IF YOU WANT ALSO Barb: k Beadweaver: k AKTATTER: OK HERE ARE SOME SAMPLES OF THESE CHAINS I USE AKTATTER: IN USE Sandy: k Winkerbill: Is there a reason rings are called "maltese" and the same technique used on a chain is called "pearl?" AKTATTER: OH FIRST LOOOK AT THIS http://tatmantats.wordpress.com/zig-zag-tatted-chain/ Margaret: I now have 3 colours of #10 crochet cotton. AKTATTER: MALTESE IS THE RIEGO TERM AND PEARL ALSO SPELLED PURL ALSO MEANT PICOTS AT ONE TIME Margaret: since I want to learn pearl tatting, I will stay up very late to sew Winkerbill: aha....ok, thanks AKTATTER: THAT 'S FIEN MARGARET Beadweaver: how do you incorporate that second thread?not sure there AKTATTER: A PICOT GAUGE WAS ONCE CALLED A PURLING PIN Sharren: k Winkerbill: ooh, i've seen that term before....dien't exactly know what it WAS, but I've seen the words! Cynthia: that's a sweet name.... Margaret: k AKTATTER: IN TH CHAIN YOU HAVE EITHER ONE BALL AND 2 SHUTTLES OR 3 SHUTTLES Beadweaver: I have 1 thread on my needle AKTATTER: ONE THREAD IS THE CORE THREAD (FROM THE BALL OR SH2) AKTATTER: TH WORKING SHUTTLE IS SH1 AND IT IS USED TO "TAT" DS Beadweaver: the needle isn't the core Winkerbill: seems like they had a little ring you wore on your thumb, and tne little pin hung from a chain attached to the ring.... Winkerbill: ;-) AKTATTER: THIS ALTERNATES WITH SH3 WHICH ONLY WRAPS THE DS ONTO THE CORE THREAD AKTATTER: THE THREAD THAT GOES THRU THE EYE OF THE NEEDLE IS THE CORE THREAD AKTATTER: FOR THE NEEDLE TATTER THAT THREAD CONTINUES BACK TO THE BALL ITSELF stitchingsharon from x.x.x.33 joined the chat 23 minutes ago AKTATTER: JANE EBORALL USED THESE CHAINS IN HER PATTERN http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~nickeb/SunMoonStars.pdf AKTATTER: WELL SHARON AKTATTER: AND IN HER BUG PATTERN http://www.e.n.e.btinternet.co.uk/Bugs3.pdf Sharren: k Margaret: sorry, G, I have the needle threaded, do I use a separate colour for the ball thread #1 on the left? Margaret: G, how do you wrap a ds with the right hand? where does it go? stitchingsharon: k AKTATTER: IT IS THE MIRROR IMAGE OF THE LEFT HAND WRAPPING Margaret: sorry, G, I took that phone call and am way behind everyone else AKTATTER: I ONLY LEARNED TODAY EARLIER THAT THIS IS NOT DONE BY MANY PEOPLE SO I WILL MAKE UP SOME PHOTOS TO SHOW YOU AKTATTER: ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? Paulaw: when you add the second color thread, do you have an end you have to hide later? Cynthia: that would help lots of people...I figured out how to do it lefty and then switching has me confused AKTATTER: I HAVE SOME EYE CANDY TO SHARE ALSO AKTATTER: YES THERE IS AN END TO HIDE Paulaw: ok maria alcant: which photo...Iam lost Sharren: k Barb: When I did it earlier today I still used my left hand to wrap both colors on the needle. Liz: k AKTATTER: I HAVE TO MAKE A PHOTO TO SHOW THE WRAPPING OF A DS USING THE RIGHT HAND INSTAED OF THE LEFT HAND AS IS NORMAL MARIAA Beadweaver: yes Barb: I just made sure to keep the loops opposite of each other on th eneedle. AKTATTER: BARB DID YOU HAVE THE CAPS ONT HE DS LINING UP ON BOTH SIDES OR ONE SIDE? Sandy: This certainly clears up my confusion with all the different terminology. Thanks! Barb: At first I had them on only one side and then saw that that was wrong. AKTATTER: OK ONE OF OUR MEMBERS stitchingsharon: k Barb: I did it in two colors. AKTATTER: alyn Teo, a member of the online tatting class, is now teaching tatting in Singapore. blog=http://knottybees.blogspot.com/ Margaret: I have done one red ds with LH and one white ds beside it with RH. the bars are on opposite sides of the needle -- is this right? AKTATTER: JUST CHECK OUT HER BLOG i AM SO PROUD TO KNOW THAT SHE IS TEACHING NOW Barb: And I made sure that when I did the 2nd color that the caps were fcing away from me instead of toward me. AKTATTER: THAT IS CORRECET MARGARET RIGHT ON! AKTATTER: TERRIFICE BARB SEE THIS WAS NOT SO HARD! Barb: No.. and I did it with my left hand. Barb: the wraps that is. maria alcant: congratulation!!!!! Barb: But if I didn't nudge the caps they would slid under the needle on the same side as the other color Sandy: Do you mean that you do one side using "directional" method --like the second half of a split ring? AKTATTER: WHEN YOU GET TO CALYN'S BLOG LOOK AT THE MIDDLE RIGHT SIDE Barb: It was strange, because i did the same technique and one had all the caps lined up.. well, three facing towards me and three facing the opposite way. Margaret: I got it!! I simply walked myself thru the RH by doing it slowly step-bt-step as I was taught with LH and noticed where on my hand the threads were and kept them in same place AKTATTER: RIGHT SANDY YOU GOTIT Barb: But when I nudged the caps of the red thread (2nd color) they faced the correct way and the thread over was in the correct position. Cynthia: awesome Margaret! Cynthia: brb Margaret: eg between third and second finger and neelde up finger joint (second half) Sandy: I've always done it that way and thought it was wrong, but it worked!
