Barb: I have been doing split rings
AKTATTER: ok that's good
Barb: And I go ahead and pull the ring closed. And then I don't make the teardrop thing.
Barb: I just go ahead and make the next one. But that gives me a kind of mock picot if I don't get the first ds tight
AKTATTER: that is ok it is strictly necessary after split ring
Barb: I've been doing the right side..wrong side kind.
Barb: I was wondering if I'm doing it right?
AKTATTER: absolutely true, the mock picot is often desired a  the spot but if it is no
Barb: Should I do the teardrop thing where I cross the threads and then pass the needle up? Or is it necessary?
AKTATTER: t thenhold the split ring at the middle of the needle
Barb: I like the way the rings sit on top of each other when I don't make the 'knot' between them.
AKTATTER: and on top of the needle, beneath your thumb
AKTATTER: do not let it dangle down below the needle
AKTATTER: then warp the first hs extra tight, as much as the needle will allow
Barb: I have been trying to make the first ds tight so it won't leave a space. But maybe I"m not making it tight enough.
Barb: Ahhhh ok.. It's just a tension thing then?
Barb: I was making my little granddaughter a bracelet with just split rings..on on top of the other, but then I noticed the mock picots between the rings. And that wasn't the look I wanted.
AKTATTER: there will always be a smidgen of thread  between the two rings but tighten as much as possible

Barb: I'm still practicing with the shuttle too, but I'm not ready to do anything fancy yet. LOL Just been practicing the ds and picots right now.

Barb: Ahh.. So is it just a tension thing with the shuttle too?
AKTATTER: actually there is a name for this disease barb, it is called gapsosis
AKTATTER: it is easier to remedy in shuttle tatting though

Barb: At first I was pulling all the ds really tight because they all looked so neat. But then when I went to pull them down the thread I had  a really hard time getting them over the eye of the needle.

AKTATTER: pull down on the wrapping thread until the slack is gone and the picot touches the last ds made prior to the join

AKTATTER: inbetween the legs of the picot on the new ring there is an extra bit of thread showing

AKTATTER: that is ok if it is one color work

AKTATTER: to make the work look better use the down join instead

AKTATTER: the down join is made the same way, but you place the wrapping thread on TOP of the picot
AKTATTER: and use the needle point to pull the loop DOWN thru the picot and slide the loop over the neede point

Barb: I've done the up join and the down join..but not the 'down and dirty'.. just slip it over join
Barb: I didn't know that was an option.

AKTATTER: only time i use it is when making a long chain as for garland for miniature holiday tree and i can slip a bead on the joining picot qnd the picot over the needle point quickly and it doesn't matter it if twists
