Susan Fuller's "Learning About Joins" Snowflower Flake


At this point the pattern makes a "Snow Flower" since there are just the first 3 rounds finished for this class! The model was tatted with white DMC Cebelia, Size #10. To make just the Snowflower use 1 shuttle and ball wound CTM (See http://members.aol.com/SLWelker/ctm.html). To make a SnowflowerFlake (the rest of the pattern will be available soon) wind 2 shuttles CTM.
Abbreviation & Definitions

± = a tiny joining picot

- = small picot (about 1/4" space)

-- = medium picot (about 3/8 "space)

+ = join

† = Downward Shuttle Join (this dagger symbol was the only HTML character I felt could represent this join)

1. Bring the end of the completed chain up next to the joining space/picot
2. draw a large loop of the shuttle thread downward thru the joining space/picot
3. put the shuttle thru the loop from front to back
4. gently pull up shuttle thread to snug down

† V = Variation:
Work steps 1-3, Do not tighten shuttle thread

4. take the ball and put it thru the loop from back to front
5. gently pull the shuttle thread in an upward direction closing the loop (it closes around the ball thread, so make sure there is not slack in the ball thread; if there is slack, it will form an unwanted extra loop)
6. In this pattern, this join forms the first half of a ds, so
7. Make the second half of a ds, this counts as the 1st ds of the next chain.

COOR: "Climbing Out Of a Ring thru a (mock) picot" as described by Elgiva Nichols in her book, "Tatting: Technique & History", as ". . . an old method, used by Riego, and recently revived." I came across the abbreviation for this technique more than 15 years ago, but don't recall where.

Ring A is a normal OVOID tatted ring.

Ring B is a round center ring tatted in the traditional manner of beginning the ring in the middle of a set of DS and then cutting the threads and hiding them on the back.

Ring C is a round center ring tatted with full sets of DS and "climbs out" by means of the mock picot.


Mock picot: Can be formed by leaving a space of threads equal in length to the size of the picot needed, then making a lockstitch, which is necessary when "climbing out" to a chain.

Lk St: stitch in which one of the halves of the ds have not been "flipped/capsized/transferred", i.e. the half stitch is wrapped not tatted. I do not transfer the 1st half of the ds, then I make a normal 2nd half, i.e. 1HS wrapped 2HS tatted.

SCh: split chain: leave a bare unworked space of shuttle thread—slightly shorter than the length of thread needed, make a shuttle join to the anchor point specified in the "pattern instructions".

Snowflake Instructions


Central Ring: (1-1--1)5x -1, COOR [the LkSt used for this "climbing out" counts as the 1st ds of the following Ch]

Rnd 1: Ch (4 -- 4 , † V [ to next --] ) 6x, [the last join is made into the mock picot formed by the COOR]

Rnd 2: Ch 4 ± 3 -- 3 CWJ [ to next --] 3 -- 3 ± 4, † V [ into space formed by 1st † V on Prev Round]
(4 + 3 -- 3 CWJ [ to next --] 3 -- 3 ± 4 † V [ into space formed by next † V on Prev Round] ) 4x
(4 + 3 -- 3 CWJ [ to next --] 3 -- SCh of 3, leave a bare space of shuttle thread just less than the space for 4ds,
anchor shuttle thread with a † [ to space formed by last † V on Prev Round ]
complete right side of SCh with 4 wrap ds.

At this point you can make a Snowflower by tying off the ends to the first small picot on Rnd 2.
