Terry McGuffin's Bell Ornament "Isabella"

Isabella by Terry McGuffin

Note: Row 1 is based on Lori Ludmun's pattern.

2 shuttles, #12 Perle cotton, beads and star bead.

Skills: Direct method chains encapsulating third thread.

Begin with 2 shuttles, continuous wind (CTM).

1. R 4 - 4 - 4 - 4.

2. R 4 + (join to last picot of previous ring = LPPR) 4 - 4 - 4 - 4.

3. R 4 + (LPPR) 4 - 4 - 4. Ch 3 - 3 - 3 - 3.

4. R 4 + (to center p of R#3) 4.

5. R 4 - 4. Ch 3 - 3 - 3

6. R 4 + (LPPR) 4. Ch 4

7. (Sh 2) R 4 - 1 — 1 - 4. Ch 4

8. (Sh 1) R 4 + (to p in R#5&6) 4. Ch 3 - 3 - 3

9. R 4 + (to same p forming group of 4) 4.

10. R 4 + (to Rings 3 & 4) 4. Tie a knot in a thread about 12-14” long. Lay the knotted end just to the left of the ring and using direct method, encapsule thread, Ch 3 - 3 - 3 - 3.

11. R 4 - 4 + (to joined R# 3,4&10) 4 - 4.

12. R 4 + (LPPR) 4 + (to R#2) 4 - 4 - 4.

13. R 4 + (LPPR) 4-4-4. Ch 2^1, remove thread, chain 4 more. Using small crochet hook, add 3 beads to thread. Add star bead (one hole is between 2 points, other hole is in a point. Insert crochet hook between 2 points, pull thread thru.) Add 1 bead, pull thread back up through star, add 3 beads. Slide group up to work but don’t tighten. Should have some play in the thread. Add thread back in and ch 1-2 trim off knotted end of thread.

14. R 4 - 4 + (to center p of R#13) 4 - 4. Continue in pattern #2-14 keeping 3rd thread in all chains. Continue #2-14 for pattern.

Row 2 (no beads in this row but you may add some to joins if you choose)

R 4 + (to R#2 of prev. row) 4. R4+ (to p in R#12 of prev. row) 4. Ch 3 - 5 - 3.

R 4 + (to joined #13 & 14) 4. Ch 3 - 5 - 3. Continue in pattern around

Row 3. Two shuttles begin with double rings as per graph, add beads in next ring.

Using bottom shuttle only:
R 1 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 3 (total of 14 picots)
(2 picots for each pattern repeat) Slip knot into first picot. Leave about 18” of thread. Lace into small picots on either side of bead work.

Using top shuttle & ball or 2 shuttles.

Row 1 R 4 - 2 - 2 - 4. *Ch 3 - 3

R 4 + (LPPR) 2 - 2 - 4. Continue until you have 14 rings & chains. Leave about 24” of thread to lace. If this row wants to slide off “shoulder” of bell, add another row.

Using shuttle & ball. Join to center p of ring, chain 2 - 2 + to next center p of next ring around.
