Donna Hamby's Christmas Lace on Glass

Many thanks to Donna Hamby for preparing this lesson for the online tatting class. The original doily, "There is That Medallion Again", came from the files of eTatters . So we send an extra thank you to Roger aka Freedman for sharing, also.

Donna tells us that she learned to tat in January 2004 and just doesn't have enough time to do all she would like to do. Donna attended the Palmettos Tat-Days 2005 in Columbia, SC, last June and learned some additional techniques and has been attending the weekly classes as often as possible to add even more techniques to her arsenal.

Here are some basic how-to's on putting together the ornament.

Donna writes: "I wanted to use the green, red, and white variegated thread that I had because it is so interesting. It is a size 60 and I chose the pattern to use. I felt that the pattern would not cover the base of the teardrop ball far enough up the stem so I added 2 additional picots to each arm of the doily to extend it a little. (If I do another one I will use larger thread. I think this would be heavenly in 8 pearl cotton and I have some I would like to try later.) I wanted to simply pull the arms together with a piece of the thread but the arms even with lengthening still did not come to the breaking point in the teardrop, thus I chose to put a ribbon around the ornament and I simply laced the arms of the ornament to the ribbon.

I tied a bow as you can see in the photo and stitched a 5 ring flower to the ornament I felt I needed some additional color at the top so I gathered the ribbon again with a bow and attached 5 ring flower and this time I attached several scattered 5 ring flowers around the ribbon to have at different levels around the back side of the ornament. I would liked to have had smaller ribbon but when I was searching this wider size was the only ribbon I could find in red and that is what I really wanted. I think the smaller ribbon might be more attractive and would let the clear plastic ornament show a little more. Happy Holidays!
